IN BRIEF
GERMANY’S Lufthansa Group made an operating profit of US$208 million in the second quarter of this year. The carrier said that “recovery in demand,
particularly in cargo and intercontinental traffic, and the efforts to reduce costs in all areas of the group during the past months played decisive roles in recording the positive result”. Lufthansa executive board member and
Government, airport and logistics executives officially welcome the SkyCargo B777F test flight
chief financial officer Stephan Gemkow noted: “The freight business shows that consistent cost management also pays off during market recovery phases.”
Catering to special needs
AT THE end of June, Hellmann Calipar Healthcare Logistics opened its new healthcare logistics building at DWC, marking another step in the airport’s ambition to develop as the premier regional hub for international logistics service providers. The facility is designed to cater solely to the specialised
needs of the pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors by offering a concept of specialised logistics services aimed at maintaining product integrity throughout the fast-cycle supply chain. “Pharmaceutical and healthcare logistics … deals with
susceptible and time-sensitive products that need to be carried through the supply chain in a controlled manner,” explains Jost Hellmann, co-owner of Hellmann Calipar. “As such, it needs to be supported by a highly-efficient logistics environment that allows fast-cycle transit, high- quality technological infrastructure and global connectivity through a fast, multimodal transportation network.”
n Hellmann Calipar is a strategic joint venture between Hellmann Worldwide Logistics of Germany and Calipar Integrated Logistics of India, a specialised producer of pharmaceutical and healthcare products.

THE ISLAND kingdom of Bahrain plans to privatise its national carrier Gulf Air “as soon as possible”, a senior government official has informed. Gulf Air has undergone years of restructuring after shareholders Abu Dhabi, Qatar and Oman gave up their stakes and established their own successful national carriers – respectively Etihad Airways, Qatar Airways and Oman Air.
WORLD AIRWAYS, the Atlanta-based subsidiary of Global Aviation Holdings, is to add two leased B747-400 freighters to its fleet. The aircraft are scheduled for delivery in December and February. The deal will grow World’s B747-400 freighter fleet to four aircraft. The carrier said it is also in the process of reactivating an MD-11 freighter that it had placed into storage last year, bringing its MD-11F fleet up to nine aircraft strong.
DURING the Farnborough Airshow in the UK, the Dubai-based Emirates Airlines placed an order with Boeing for an additional 30 B777-300ER aircraft, worth some US$9.1 billion at list prices. The deal adds to the fleet of 71 B777-300ERs previously ordered by the carrier, of which 53 aircraft are currently in service. The ‘freight-friendly’ aircraft offers a 20.1-tonne payload in its bellyhold cargo compartments.
