among its customers, employees and scientists, Deutsche Post DHL CEO Frank Appel noted: “Globalisation presents the logistics field with new challenges each day. It is important to us that we continue to take a pioneering role in innovative logistics solutions.” He is well aware that many expert commentators believe that

climate change is “the greatest danger facing mankind” and that global warming will force governments to rethink their environmental policies. The impending threat will change the consciousness of every individual, Appel believes, significantly influencing their future behaviour.

IN BRIEF

ON 18 AUGUST, Qatar Airways Cargo added a twice-weekly B777-200 freighter service to Chicago, routeing via Amsterdam from Doha. The Qatari flag-carrier already flies passenger equipment to New York, Washington and Houston, but the Chicago service represents its first all-cargo routeing to the US.

“With the recent introduction of Boeing 777 freighters into our cargo fleet, we’ve wasted no time in developing new markets, and we’re especially pleased to be launching our first US cargo route to Chicago O’Hare, the busiest airport in the world,” said Qatar Airways CEO Akbar Al Baker.

Appel: “The pursuit of progress is something that is deeply ingrained in humankind”

In past statements on globalisation and ecological change, he has emphasised: “The pursuit of progress is something that is deeply ingrained in humankind. Our society has moved forward time and again – and that shows us that the world has a great chance to be a better place tomorrow than it is today.” Through its research efforts in partnership with CDI, DHL aims

to turn these projects into new business solutions – some of them based on new cutting-edge technologies and many of them just based on common sense. These solutions will improve operational processes for DHL and its customers, increase efficiency and enhance their competitiveness, the express logistics provider believes. According to CDI president Professor Fan Gang the institute will

“sharpen our logistics edge” through the partnership. He went on: “We are excited about the projects that will result… DHL has an impressive track record in its global climate protection programme and I am confident that we will jointly develop solutions that contribute to a cleaner environment.” The Deutsche Post DHL spokesman concluded that the company

would like to see the global logistics industry being regarded as “a genuine trendsetter, setting the standards that others will follow – so we have to keep on finding new ways to keep ahead.”

34 AIR LOGISTICSCHINA

IN JULY, Boeing celebrated the delivery of its 800th aircraft to a Chinese customer – a Next-Generation B737-800 to Air China. From a small beginning in 1972, when the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) ordered 10 B707s, Boeing aircraft are today the mainstay of China’s air travel and cargo system – with more than 50 percent of all the commercial aircraft operating in the country being Boeing products.

GLOBAL LOGISTICS services supplier Agility has started operations in Cambodia with the opening of an office in Phnom Penh. Offering a range of air freight, sea freight, Customs clearance, warehousing and local distribution solutions, Agility will also arrange cross-border trucking services initially connecting Phnom Penh to Ho Chi Minh City and Bangkok. Services linking South China and Vietnam to Phnom Penh will follow shortly.
