acting as a multimodal transport hub offering round-the- clock cargo services and connections to trans-European road, rail and waterway links. At the time the agreements to stage the 2010 event
were signed, former TIACA chairman Gary Bartek, marketing manager for cargo development at Kansas City International airport, commented: “What particularly impressed our selection committee about Amsterdam was not just its freight volumes and impressive infrastructure but its commitment to air cargo and its ambitious development plans.” Having handled 1.29 million tonnes of cargo in 2009
– flown to and from 284 scheduled airline destinations in over 90 countries – and with 25 scheduled full-freighter operators providing services at the airport, Schiphol feels it is the right time to be promoting itself as the cargo gateway to Europe. The airport is keen to highlight its ACT initiative, which
Osinga: “it’s going to be the best ACF yet”
aims to facilitate growth in its cargo throughput to 3 million tonnes within the next decade. It also has the Schiphol SmartGate programme, where the airport, the air cargo industry and Dutch Customs have joined forces to integrate the monitoring of goods leaving the EU from Schiphol, allowing rapid and efficient clearance.
