The city already has a local passenger carrier, Chongqing Airlines, which is 60 percent owned by Guangzhou-headquartered China Southern.

At present, Jade operates two cargo routes from the gateway: Chengdu - Hong Kong and Chengdu - Vienna - Amsterdam. The company said it will enlarge its market share in Chengdu on these two routes to develop the city as a cargo transportation hub in western China. Last December, the Chengdu municipal government


signed a strategic co-operation agreement with Jade, allowing the carrier to open a variety of routes from the city to Europe. An official from Jade Cargo said that Chengdu has


great potential in the air freight business as one of the top economic entities in western China. As the largest air cargo hub in the region, its two-year-old air cargo terminal, stretching over an area of 11 hectares, can handle 380,000 tons of freight a year.


WUHAN – GIANT AMBITION Wuhan is spending RMB14.6 billion (US$2.15 billion) to construct the largest air hub in central China. Wuhan officials aim to make their city the fourth-busiest cargo hub in China, after Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. The third phase of the expansion under way at Wuhan
