Pupils box clever at college

Almost one hundred Year 2 pupils from William Shrewsbury Primary School have enjoyed a lesson in woodwork, courtesy of Construction Crafts lecturers at Burton College.

The children, who are all aged 6 or 7 years old, took part in “Boxing Clever”, an initiative based in the Lichfield Street Campus’s Wood Trades Workshop which involved the groups constructing their own wooden pencil boxes aided by College students and lecturers.

Talking about the project Programme Area Manager Wood Occupations & Painting & Decorating Ian Vanes-Jones said, “The College’s Curriculum Area of Construction and Sustainability always relishes the chance to work with local school children. It is a great opportunity to give the children an insight into the world of Construction whilst also allowing them to have some educational fun and be involved in a project which will help them fulfil curriculum areas such as Maths and English back in school. All of the children have responded really well with loads of enthusiasm for the project. In addition, the Timber Trades students really enjoyed the opportunity to work with the groups, as it helps to develop their communication,

“The prospect of loans and debts put me off further education after leaving school, so I was delighted when PiMS offered me this opportunity,” explains Erin. “Now I can re-pay the favour to help the company to grow. Having in-house consultants with cutting edge design expertise, as well as technical skills, will help to minimise costs for our clients without the need to compromise on great end results.” PiMS workspace Operations Manager, Nicky Hatt, adds: “Nurturing our team’s individual talents is proving to be a mutually beneficial investment for PiMS. By covering the costs for our staff to gain qualifications, we can tailor their skills to fit our needs, and hopefully maintain a loyal workforce.
