The BREEAM In-Use model forms the framework for Schal’s new service. BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) is a new scheme aimed at helping building managers reduce running costs and improve the environmental performance of existing buildings.
Since its launch in 2009, BREEAM In-Use has provided the standard for best practice in sustainable design, quickly becoming the de facto measure used to describe a building’s environmental performance. Consisting of a standard easy-to-use assessment methodology and third-party verification – provided by Schal Sustainability – BREEAM In-Use provides a clear and credible route
map to improving sustainability. Schal Sustainability’s new
environmental benchmarking services benefits from being overseen by BRE, BREEAM’s Conceptual Parent Company, who will ensure that the standards of assessment are continually improved to reflect all recent advances in sustainability. In addition to the obvious CSR and legislative benefits that this service will provide, Schal Sustainability also expects that the continued

60% of Directors in Power Efficiency Survey believe CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme will give them a competitive advantage
ower Efficiency, the energy procurement and carbon strategy consultancy, has announced the results of its CRC Energy Efficiency Survey, which was conducted with Board-level executives attending two of its recent central London CRC Seminars. The survey of 80 company directors from in and around The City, showed that broadly companies see the scheme as having the potential to make a positive contribution to their businesses, but over half (58%) had found the scheme tougher to prepare for than

Nearly three quarters (74%) believed that the scheme would ultimately help reduce the amount of carbon consumed, despite the challenges that the scheme presented in terms of getting up and running. John Field, director of carbon management at Power Efficiency said: “Whilst the scheme may seem simple to prepare for, things can easily spiral out of control for property companies with extensive tenanted portfolios or if you have multiple companies within a group.
It is essential to have started planning early and have an understanding of your inventory of assets and energy meters as well as their energy usage. Only then is it possible to make the decisions that will reduce the amount of carbon consumed.”
60% of respondents suggested that the scheme was not only likely to reduce their carbon usage, but would also give them a competitive advantage over other operators in their market.
