For the last three consecutive years, Portakabin has successfully delivered approximately 40,000m2

of modular

accommodation across the UK, including 110 education projects, in just eight weeks over the peak period for school building work.

This scale of work on simultaneous multiple sites – and delivered on time and on budget – demonstrates the unrivalled capabilities and resources of Portakabin. Portakabin has provided interim buildings for a number of Building Schools for the Future projects including schemes at Lea Manor School in Luton working with Wates Construction, as well as projects in Harrow, Haringey and Brixton. Portakabin also completed two challenging projects after schools were devastated by fire. In just 10 weeks, Portakabin built an entire 6,000m2

interim

school for 800 pupils and staff at Campsmount School in Doncaster. Pupils at Carleton Community High School in Pontefract achieved record GCSE exam results studying in a new interim school supplied by Portakabin. Here, 23 school buildings totalling 4,000m2 were sourced, fully fitted out, installed and occupied only six weeks from receipt of order, despite difficult site conditions and whilst meeting the school’s stringent design and logistics requirements. Portakabin education buildings for hire can be fitted out to accommodate a wide variety of applications, such as science laboratories, art rooms, dance studios, food technology rooms, IT suites, general classrooms, school or college receptions, kitchen and dining facilities, and administrative offices.

Portakabin is also now fully accredited by Buying Solutions, the Government agency that allows schools and local authorities to reduce the tendering process by up to 77 days.

Over the past four years, Portakabin has delivered 99.6 per cent of buildings on time and on budget – a key commitment in its ground-breaking Customer Charter. www.portanews.co.uk

20 feature :: portable & modular buildings Waco UK has a

Waco UK have 60 years experience providing attractive, versatile and robust education buildings – a new addition has now been added to this suite, PremierClassic, a timber-framed building manufactured under offsite, quality controlled conditions. PremierClassic adds to the successful, innovative, steel-framed PremierPlus range, while providing an economical alternative to traditional building methods.

PremierClassic is environmentally friendly, using sustainable materials, yet offering a durable and resilient building system. Timber used is harvested from approved FSC or PEFC managed forests,

Off-site construction specialist and Portakabin subsidiary, Yorkon, has just craned the final modules into position on site at Colchester General Hospital as part of a major ProCure21 project – the largest development in the hospital’s recent history.

The project is a £20m ProCure21 contract awarded to Principal Supply Chain Partner, Kier Eastern. Modules for the new paediatrics department, elective care centre and surgical ward have been manufactured off site and installed by Yorkon in a £10m sub-contract. In order to reduce the programme time for the new building by around six months, to the benefit of patient care, Kier took the decision to use an off-site solution. The approach also allowed an existing ward building on the site to remain in use until just days before the first modules arrived on site.

Designed by Tangram Architects, the three-storey building will provide an elective care centre, 68 inpatient beds, consultation and treatment rooms, nurses’ stations, two isolation beds, administrative offices, a school room, children’s dining room, utility room, stores, toilets and ancillary rooms.

148 steel-framed modules up to 14m long and 3.3m wide, and each weighing up to 12 tonnes, were delivered and installed in a total of 17 days. The units were partially fitted out off site, including internal partitioning and first fix M&E services.

The new Yorkon pre-installed concrete floor has been used in all the modules – the first time this award-winning technology has been used for a complete building. It is an innovative off-site solution ideal for high traffic areas and to accommodate sensitive hospital equipment.

The building has been designed to create an attractive and welcoming environment for staff and patients, particularly given its prominent location next to the hospital’s main entrance. It will have deeply articulated façades finished in a palette of materials, including white render, vertical bands of rainscreen cladding and curtain walling.

The new building will be completed this autumn after just seven months on site. www.kier.co.uk www.yorkon.info

and the building process results in improved management of waste both on and off site, having a positive effect on energy consumption and resources.
