Ten tips for ventilation hygiene
Clean air should be a basic right for us all so it’s essential to be aware of the condition of ventilation systems and their impact on air quality and general cleanliness of the working environment. The following are a few simple techniques to help you assess air quality in the workplace which may be being affected by your ventilation system: • Check the ceiling/wall air grilles – are they clean?
• Check if the ceiling or tiles around the grilles are clean
• Check if there are discolouration marks in the areas adjacent to the air grilles
• Is the temperature constant? • Is it too hot or cold? • Are there any draughts? • Are there high levels of dust within your working environment?
• Do you or your colleagues suffer from abnormal bouts of sneezing or nasal discomfort?
• If you place a clean sheet of white paper on your desk and leave it for 12 hours overnight does it remain clean or does it show dust levels?

• Has the ventilation system been cleaned in the last 5 years? Remember, a well maintained ventilation system will not have dirty grilles, ceilings or walls or be subject to draughts, dust or extremes of temperature. The temperature should reflect the season and be comfortable. If in doubt, most professional duct cleaning services will provide free assessments to establish the cleanliness and condition of ventilation ducts. Think clean, think ventilation hygiene!
