Chalmor assists Council’s carbon savings
Chalmor’s lighting, combined with BlueWave lighting controllers, is helping Newcastle City Council to reduce its energy consumption and carbon emissions across large areas of its building portfolio. “Upgrading the lighting is a key element in the Council’s Carbon Management programme and is projected to reduce our carbon emissions by 1,200 tonnes of CO2
per annum once all of the
work has been completed,” explained a council spokesman. “Replacing existing T8 fluorescent tubes with high efficiency T5 light sources, using Chalmor’s combination of efficient products and design skills, will reduce our installed electrical load by around 50%. Having worked with Chalmor on a number of projects we have been very pleased with the levels of service and support, and the quality of the products,”
he continued. So far,
four buildings have been upgraded to T5 lighting and a further
nine buildings will be included in the roll- out programme. In most of the buildings, the lighting is linked to Chalmor’s BlueWave 2-channel lighting controllers, enabling the lighting to be controlled in relation to occupancy and daylight levels. For smaller spaces, Chalmor has provided single channel combined occupancy/light sensors to achieve the same level of control with minimum re-wiring. The return on investment for each building varies but some of the car parks that are lit 24 hours a day are expected to
Profile light the way for WWI Aerodrome restoration
Profile Lighting has successfully completed the lighting contract for the RS Performance workshops located in the prestigious Stow Maries WWI Aerodrome restoration project at Cold Norton Parish near Maldon, Essex.
The aerodrome was the home of 37 (Home Defence) Squadron, Royal Flying Corps which subsequently became 37 Squadron Royal Air Force. It was abandoned in 1919 and whilst many
buildings were adapted over the years for farming use it remained largely unloved until it was bought by Steve Wilson and Russell Savory of RS Performance. They embarked on a complete restoration of the site to return it to its former glory and provide a historic home for their growing specialist automotive business. Profile’s brief was to provide a well illuminated workshop area sympathetic to the buildings involved and the overall
restoration project. To allow the greatest possible flexibility the modular M8 lighting system was chosen to provide complementary visual aesthetics when suspended below the existing exposed beam buildings that are a feature of the architecture. The resulting interlocking grid pattern provides excellent light distribution whilst employing internal cabling which limits the amount of services needing to be run externally.
Similarly the Pro-Flite lighting system was employed in 2 suspended rectangular layouts for the front office areas providing attractive and effective office lighting with minimal disruption. Both systems were specified with a high quality silver powder coated finish, high frequency electronic control gear and integral 3-hour maintained emergency lighting packs.
RS Performance specialise in designing & developing high performance engines and exclusive car production and their new facility at Stow Marie is part of their on- going business development programme. When completed the Stow Marie’s restoration project is planned to provide a museum, guided tours & lectures on the site’s history as well as a visitors centre for the study of local nature and wildlife. yield an 18 month payback, including installation costs. Most of the buildings offer a payback of less than five years, entitling the council to take advantage of Carbon Trust/Salix loans to fund the investment.
In addition, the new T5 lamps will last three times as long as the previous T8 lamps, so maintenance costs and the cost of lamp disposal under the WEEE Directive will be less, thus reducing the total cost of ownership. Email:
