Business Academy selects LCC

When the North London Careers Academy Board wanted to treat ten of its top students and tutors to a business and management success story, Chairman Steve Wright (Past Chairman of the British Cleaning Council) called LCC Support Services to deliver a case study. LCC’s Executive Chairman, Bob Vincent and Operational Administration Director Christine Wilson carried out the presentation. Bob gave some of his personal business tips and advice on providing good customer service. Christine demonstrated LCC’s bespoke IBMS customer management software system. Bob Vincent said: “I was flattered that from 24,000 students, ten of the brightest in the Business Academy were chosen to

visit us to learn how to build and run a business. It was like being Sir Alan Sugar for the day. We enjoyed it

immensely, especially some of the detailed questions.”

The students, who were from Haringey, Enfield, North and East London, were from a two-year programme prior to entering university.

“The Careers Academy Board is reliant on businesses that can accommodate students visits as the Government has not invested in such trips, so the scheme relies on business support” said Steve Wright. www.lccss.co.uk

Local pupils win Construction Challenge County final

A team made up from Burton College students and local school pupils have won the Final of the Staffordshire Partnership Challenge Day, which was held at Stafford Rangers Football Club.

Organised by the College and Staffordshire Partnership, the Bridging the Gap Construction Challenge Day was designed to assist the students in developing a range of key teamwork skills by taking part in a physical, practical challenge whilst having fun.

Three teams made up of Key Stage 4 pupils, who attend the College for work based learning, from local schools together with Shobnall Primary school children and headed by Burton College construction students, competed against three teams from the Stoke area, three from the Stafford area, and two teams from the Tamworth area, after previously winning their Regional Qualifiers in May. The teams faced the challenge of designing and building a bridge, which allowed a model boat to go under it and carried the weight of a remote controlled car being driven over it. The teams were able to use a variety of materials including wood string plywood and only had £30 in total to construct their design. The final design

was judged by representatives from firms including Seddons and the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB).

Joe Shreeve from Pingle School, Nicola Brown and Michael Slinn from Shobnall Primary School together with Lewis Dance from William Allitt and College student Dan Wright were successful on the day, beating stiff competition.

Commenting on the event, Programme Area Manager Wood Occupations & Painting & Decorating Ian Vanes-Jones said, “This annual challenge is a very practical insight into the aspects of working well as a team to fulfil a project brief and produce something that actually works. As a result the event really helped to improve a wide range of skills including communication, problem solving, creativity, time keeping and decision making. It was great that our team won, overcoming stiff competition on the day.” Burton College’s range of Construction courses introduce students to the knowledge, understanding, personal and practical skills that underpin professions in the field of architecture, surveying, construction, civil engineering, building services engineering, planning and property. In addition to full time courses there are also a number of part time courses available in areas such as bricklaying, carpentry and joinery, machine woodworking, painting and decorating, plumbing and handcrafted furniture and design.
