Trend wallpaper shines in Big Brother
Keen-eyed viewers of the current series of Channel 4’s ‘Big Brother’ will have spotted not one, but two distinctive wallpaper designs in the bathroom. One is a custom-made floral wallpaper depicting scenes from previous shows, whilst the other is a trend-setting glass mosaic ‘wallpaper’, consisting of thousand upon thousand of tiny mosaic tiles or tesserae. Designed and made in Italy and now available in the UK, this innovative mosaic wallcovering forms part of the Trend Wallpaper collection, designed to create outstanding feature walls with tactile appeal. Prices start from £180 per square metre.
One of a collection of 64 patterns and 130 colourways, the BB-featured wallpaper is Damask from the Classic style theme, which brings patterns from the past right up-to-date, in the simplest, most sophisticated shapes and shades. Like paper wallcoverings, it has the repeated modular structure of wallpaper and is supplied on backing material, ready to fix on most interior and exterior surfaces, yet it is shiny, touchable, hardwearing, and moisture resistant. Since they comprise tiny 1.5cm square tiles, the pattern repeats can be applied smoothly across flat or contoured substrates, on walls, floors, ceilings, swimming pools - nowhere is out of bounds.
Big Brother’s own contracted tilers fitted the wallpaper and its prominent positioning alongside the ‘Tree of
Curtain walling for ‘Excellent’ office building
Temptation’, around the vanity units and sunken bath, and surrounding the outdoor pool, should ensure plenty of screen time during the show’s 13 week run. Epitomising the versatility and creativity of modern glass mosaics, the Trend Italia design team, headed by Federica Bisazza, has also rendered the iconic Big Brother eye motif as a classic mosaic wall panel, with each tiny square representing a single 1cm x 1cm tile. The resultant panel would measure 4m x 2.52m and feature almost 80,000 individual tiles in 50 different shades; the price would be around £4,500 for the 1cm2 larger 1.5cm2
version or under £3,000 using mosaics. Any personal
design or picture can be rendered to produce customised wallpaper or a single decorative panel, to special order. Tel: 01892 509690

Idenden’s new pin-up makes product selection simple
Following the successful launch of the Idenden Product Guide and positive feedback received regarding the usefulness of its at-a-glance Product Selector, a poster-sized version is now available.
Clearly larger in size than its pocket- sized cousin, the wall mountable poster makes available, with ease and simplicity,
all the Idenden product groups and cross references them, matrix style, with insulation type and substrate.
Products are grouped according to type – self adhesive tapes, coatings, adhesives, sealants, grab adhesives, fire protection and hangers – and users need only select the product, identify the insulation type and see instantly if it is appropriate or what alternative Idenden products may be equally suitable. Of course the reverse process is true with products identified from insulation or substrate type. Full colour and A1 in size, the Idenden Product Selector Poster is clear, easy to use and time-saving.
Copies of the Idenden Product Selector Poster are available from Bostik (

Building & Facilities Management – August 2010
Calthorpe House is one of a small number of buildings in the Midlands to achieve a BREEAM (2006) ‘excellent’ rating. Designed by Webb Gray & Partners for developers Calthorpe Estates, and constructed by BAM, the £40m building is also the first application of a new adaptation of Technal’s MX curtain walling system.
This latest façade option is an alternative to structural sealant glazing, which gives the benefit of clear sight lines, no caps, and flush corners for greater transparency and high quality aesthetics with uninterrupted spans of glass to maximise natural light and architectural appeal.
The system uses a specially designed ‘toggle’ which removes the need for silicone to hold the glazed units in place and is faster and simpler to install. It was specified for the front elevation of Calthorpe House. MX Visible Grid curtain walling was used to glaze the side and rear façades – demonstrating how Technal’s MX curtain walling options give specifiers the opportunity to vary the appearance of the building envelope on a single project The MX system was required to accommodate various thicknesses of glass to provide additional acoustic performance on the lower levels, and some of the curtain wall sections were pre-installed off site into concrete panels to reduce time on site.
The Technal curtain walling was glazed in green solar control glass as part of the building’s sustainability strategy, with a ceramic-coated inner pane to conceal services between floors.
Technal’s MX curtain walling suite has all the aesthetic, durability and low maintenance qualities of aluminium, combined with constant 52mm sight lines to create a uniform appearance across a comprehensive range of design options – low to high rise curtain walling; visible grid, ribbon, structural, beaded, faceted and sloped glazing.
This high performing façade solution has all the advantages of one fully integrated system – consistent sight lines and interfaces, simplified specification, ease of fabrication and installation, cost efficiency and reduced time on site.
