Birmingham City Hospital has turned to Rada, the experts in commercial showering, washroom controls, fittings and systems; to help target improved efficiencies in infection control after detecting higher than expected rates of C. difficile in one of its former Nightingale wards. The ward, which had been an acute ward for the elderly, was deemed a hospital ‘hot spot’ with more occurrences of the infection than other areas. The decision to close and refurbish the ward allowed a total rethink in terms of infection control and prevention, as well as improved ergonomics, patient comfort and privacy. The hospital’s infection control team worked with its capital projects department to put infection control at the top of the agenda for the new ward’s design, which saw 30 of Rada’s Acu non-touch digital thermostatic mixing valves installed, replacing 13 conventional taps. Rada Sense was chosen for the ward’s shower areas.
The right medicine for infection control
Testimony to the effectiveness of the revamped ward has come from the nursing staff, many of whom worked in the original ward, and whose feedback has been very positive. Dr Beryl Oppenheim, a specialist in infection control, said: ”From the outset we wanted to put infection control at the very heart of the day to day running of the new ward. From our point of view the ward in its new guise has certainly raised the bar in this respect.” In addition to the Rada Acu and Sense installations, the refurbished 25-bed unit also features floor signs in front of each hand basin with the words ‘Wash your hands’ and hand washing facilities outside the ward door.

The System consists of four major programs - daily maintenance, periodic maintenance, light restoration and full
restoration. The Daily Maintenance Program uses automatic scrubbers, high speed burnishers and PowerPolish™ HT curing pads to maintain the floors appearance. The Periodic Maintenance Program uses special polishing pads called PowerGloss to remove minor scratches and surface marring. The Light Restoration Program uses more aggressive PowerGloss pads to address floors with more severe wear. And the Full Restoration Program incorporates special diamond grinding machines to remove surface stock on new, unpolished or heavily damaged surfaces.

Doublas Delabie’s water controls for healthcare pros
With each year in Europe an alarming 5 –12% of patients contracting a nosocomial infection (hospital acquired infection, contracted during or after hospitalisation), the new specialist range of water controls from Douglas Delabie, under its Chavonnet banner, is sure to be of interest for healthcare professionals. Effective hand washing is the main measure to prevent nosocomial infections and attention to hand
hygiene by following a strict hand washing protocol, cross contamination of infections can be reduced.
The company has designed the range – fitted in operating theatres, care units, hand washing areas, sterile zones, accommodation areas – to thwart the spread of nosocomial infection (and others) in hospitals, healthcare institutions and retirement homes.
The range includes removable BIOCLIP mixers/taps, where each tap/mixer is supplied with two demountable spouts to
enable continuous use, whilst the contaminated spout is removed for effective sterilisation. The spouts are designed to accommodate connection to sterilisation filters. The BIOCLIP
removable mixer tap/spout features anti-stagnation action – a self draining system after each use preventing water stagnation and bacterial development within the sanitary fitting – and can be removed from its base for disinfection tempering with cold bactericidal solutions.
Also included are high spout electronic mixers/taps and long lever mixers to enable effective hand washing during surgical hand washing protocols. These non-touch electronic tap versions feature anti-legionella duty flush, which activates automatic draining (45 seconds, each 24 hours after last use) to prevent water stagnation and bacteria development in supply pipes, infrared presence detection and anti-scald safety via a thermostatic mixing valve (TMV).
