NEWS NATIONAL Brighton is peerless
People demonstrating excellence, innovation and progress in transport were recognised at the 10th National Transport Awards in Manchester. Brighton and Hove City Council picked up the top award of the night, the Transport Local Authority of the Year, while the award for Most Improved Transport Local Authority went to the London Borough of Sutton. Te success of
Brighton and Hove City Council is attributed to policies that actively promote
bus use, combined with innovation in promoting travel choice Te London Borough
of Sutton’s strategies and policies have changed the way people in the borough travel. Smarter Travel Sutton is a three-year marketing project aimed at reducing congestion through behavioural change, such as promoting cycling and walking and increasing bus patronage. Cllr Jane Urquhart,
portfolio holder for transport at Nottingham City Council, was given the award for Outstanding
Contribution to Local Transport. Te city is one of the few in the UK that has been able to reduce traffic levels through a combination of good public transport provision, excellent policies to promote cycling and walking and leading smarter travel initiatives. Te new tram in Nottingham has been a big success and the city is still pursuing its work-place parking levy, despite opposition. Te camera
car, launched by Bournemouth Borough Council, and Glasgow City Council’s Tourist Signs project, were both
Brighton… best transport network in the UK
highly commended in the Most Innovative Transport Project. Shropshire Council
won the award for Dedication to
Access for All, while Worcestershire County Council picked up the Sustainable travel award with its Choose how you Move project.
