BPA FOCUS INSTITUTE OF PARKING PROFESSIONALS

Time to help yourself W

WHEN DID YOU LAST TAKE THE TIME TO CONSIDER WHAT YOU GET BACK FROM YOUR JOB IN THIS CHALLENGING SECTOR? LAST WEEK, LAST MONTH – LAST YEAR, EVEN?

hen times are tough, we fight hard and strive to give all we have to ensure continued success for the organisations and businesses in which we

work, but rarely do we sit back and reflect on how we have actually benefited from our efforts. Continuing professional development (CPD) is

a well-known phrase for any professional institute and the Institute of Parking Professionals (IPP) is no exception. To those of us who don’t know what it means, it can be a daunting prospect. In actual fact, it really doesn’t need to be. CPD is all about reflection, taking a minute to think about what we have learnt through our day-to-day work, and recognising our own achievements in order to help us go forward. Here are a few tips on the what, why, when and how when it comes to effective CPD.

What is CPD?

It’s an opportunity to focus on your achievements and identify areas for personal growth through your everyday activities.

Why should I do CPD?

Often we are the masters of our own destiny, and in order to drive our careers forward, we need to be aware of our skills and identify areas in which we can develop. Only you know what your comfort zone is at work and how to challenge it, so by doing CPD regularly, you can set yourself objectives and make sure you remain fulfilled at work.

Te IPP has a package of forms and

documents on the website to help you track and log your progress in CPD. Other people might scribble a brief note of an achievement or personal observation in their diary to come back to at a later date. Only you can say what will fit your style best, but

as long as you are aiming to demonstrate how you have developed as an individual and a professional, then you are on the right track. For more information, visit www.theipp.co.uk

When can I fit CPD in? I am just so busy

CPD doesn’t need to be time-consuming. Get into the habit of reflecting on your day and understanding what went well, what could have been better, and what you might do differently next time. Make sure you pat yourself on the back for those achievements, too, no matter how small they seem – you will be amazed at how empowering it can be.

How do I begin CPD?

There are many methods and techniques available, but CPD is not a one- size-fits-all solution. Some people benefit from writing detailed notes and learning plans based on their own goals or company objectives, and make a regular

habit of doing this, adding to

it based on their reflections.
