Winchester Park Mark comes of age
Winchester City Council car parks recently received its 18th Park Mark Safer Parking award, the latest recipients being the recently opened 864-space South Winchester park-and- ride site and the newly refurbished Tower Street car park. Tis is progress for a
council that, two years ago, had only three Park Mark awards in total. Richard Hein, parking
manager for the council, said: ‘Tis demonstrates our commitment to provide high-quality, safe environments for
our customers. ‘For those people who
have not yet used the busy South Winchester site, they may be surprised at the high quality of the finish, the thought that has gone into environmental issues and the quality of the regular bus service into the city. Above all, we wish to provide a safe environment where people may park their vehicle and access the city easily and comfortably.’ Cllr Eleanor Bell,
portfolio holder for high quality environment, said: ‘Te teams at both
the city and county councils who have been responsible for the refurbishment of Tower Street and the completion of South Winchester park and ride have done an excellent job. ‘Tower Street now
has a bright and airy feel with signposting reflecting aspects of the city, while the park-and-ride has excellent waiting and toilet facilities, charging points for electric cars, as well as interpretation boards depicting the archaeology and biodiversity of the site.’
THE RIGHT TRACK Rugby railway station car park has become the 500th railway car park in Britain to be accredited under the Park Mark scheme. The £7m multi-storey car park, financed and built by Network Rail, is leased and operated by Virgin Trains. Chief operating officer of Virgin Trains, Chris Gibb, said: ‘We are delighted to receive this Park Mark award, which recognises the effective use of modern, state-of-the- art security systems within car parks. ‘Our customers today do not simply want sufficient car parking spaces, they expect quite rightly to

Trotter commented: ‘British Transport Police now has more car parks accredited under this scheme than any police force in the country. That is something the rail industry can be proud of and something that should reassure passengers and
encourage more people to park and ride.’ Rugby’s 80-metre five-storey car park has boosted its green credentials with two wind turbines on the roof, which are helping reduce the structure’s carbon footprint.
