Andelin’s Legacy by Erin Strother

My love of earthy stones comes from my grandparents. My grandmother’s family owned a small rock shop in southern Utah, and my grandfather used to make jewelry with their beautiful cabochons. He used this kite-shaped rhyolite cab with a spot of gray hematite in the center to make a bolo tie, which he wore often. I inherited the bolo after he died. It languished in a drawer for many years, until I figured out a way to give it a second life as a contemporary pendant. I hope he would approve. – Erin

Cut a 3” length of 18 gauge vintage bronze wire and make a wrapped loop. String a black glass spacer, seven 8mm picture jasper rondelles, and a black spacer and make a wrapped loop. Connect a 7mm antique brass jumpring to each side of a bolo attachment on the back of a 40mm rhyolite cabochon. Attach a 1” length of rolo chain to each of the jumprings. Attach the free end of each chain to a wrapped loop from the jasper link created in step 1. Connect a 5mm antique brass jumpring to one of the loops on the jasper link. Connect a 13mm heavy jumpring to the 5mm jumpring. Repeat on the other side of the jasper link. Cut a 13” length of leather deer skin leather lace and string the heavy jumpring, positioning it in the middle of the strand. Fold the strand in half over the top of the jumpring. Cut a 3” length of 24 gauge wire and wrap it around the doubled lace about half of an inch above the jumpring. Attach a copper fold-over crimp end to both free ends of the leather lace. Repeat for the other side of the necklace. Attach a 4mm copper and a 9mm antique brass jumpring to one of the crimp ends. Connect a hook clasp to the other end with a 4mm jumpring. Cut a 2” length of 22 gauge wire and make a wrapped loop. String a 15mm ebony wood coin bead and make a wrapped loop. Cut a 7” length of bronze cable chain and attach one end to the ebony wood link using the last link of the chain as a jumpring. Attach the other end of the chain to one of the 4mm copper jumprings on the end of the leather lace. Repeat for the other side of the necklace.
