Lisa Kan
Lisa worked as an engineer in consumer electronics developing LCD and plasma monitor technologies for nearly ten years, but it was not her passion or dream. She took a leap and believed that although she had no formal artistic training, her lifelong desire to be an artist was a gift bestowed upon her to share with others. Today she finds herself playing many roles in a story not even she knows the ending to, as there are infinite possibilities, which is the slogan for her business.
Acting sometimes as glass beadmaker, beadweaver, jewelry designer, author, teacher, or whatever she transforms into next, as long as Lisa is busy dreaming of the next creation, working with her hands, sharing through her designs, and teaching others through her articles, she is happy!
Her designs are instinctively unique and distinctly speak of her, the hopeless romantic from the past trapped in the modern world. Lisa infuses her beadwork with historical influences, evoking a sense of romanticism in the feminine mystique, capturing the essence of bygone eras through her careful use of contemporary components. There is generally a story woven into each of her designs, often through the use of symbolic representation from the selected components.
Most often these designs are modular components combined into more complex designs. These modular beadweaving design techniques were shared in Lisa’s first book, Bead Romantique. In addition to this book, one could also find many articles written in the last three years in major bead publications. Writing is the avenue Lisa uses to teach her techniques as she is often busy with many projects, collaborations, exhibiting at nation wide bead venues, and chasing the next adventure.
Although no historical era is safe from Lisa, she is predominantly influenced by the Victorian (1837 to 1901) and Art Nouveau (1890 to 1905) eras. The list of artists most influential to her design sensibilities is long and exhaustive, but include, in both beadwork and glass, Georges Fouquet, Emile Galle, Daum Nancy, Alphonse Mucha, Louis Comfort Tiffany, and Rene Lalique, who is her favorite artist.
Being inspired by Mother Nature is a hallmark of Lisa’s designs. Lisa states “I never find myself bored. I often find
that I never have enough time in the day to create. There are a gazillion ideas waiting to explore. The future holds infinite possibilities with many creative journeys, opportunities, and adventures. The collections of designs in the next pages were created especially for Bead Trends readers and it is no coincidence that many can be worn interchangeably to complement one another. Enjoy the story told.”
