SUSTAINABLE CITIES
Inaugural China Sustainable Cities mission paves way for the future
Last November a total of 13 companies, including Arup, Gammon Construction and Mott MacDonald, participated in UKTI’s fi rst Sustainable Cities Mission to China. Organised by UKTI, working in
partnership with the China-Britain Business Council (CBBC), visits were arranged to the cities of Chongqing, Wuhan and Changsha. The Sustainable Cities Initiative is
underpinned by a signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) with the three Chinese cities. The aim of the initiative is to
develop commercial operations for UK and Chinese companies in the area of sustainable and environmental technologies for cooperation, covered by a wide range of sectors including: emission reductions; land reclamation; air pollution control; decontamination of waste; water and wastewater management and treatment; urban planning and regeneration; and energy effi cient building design and construction. Most of the companies who took part
in the mission already have some kind of presence in China. In some cases the Chinese representative attended the mission and in others the UK representative was present. In Chongqing and Wuhan round
table discussions and one-to- one meetings with business and government offi cials took place. However, in Changsha, the focus was on fact-fi nding, as the delegation was the fi rst from the UK to visit the city since the MoU was signed in September 2009. Although it is too early to say
whether any major deals have been struck or contracts signed as a result of the mission, many useful introductions were made between UK and Chinese companies and the seed has been successfully sown for similar missions in the future.

India was the destination for a UKTI environment and water seminar mission in February this year. Organised by UKTI, seven UK companies took part and travelled to New Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata. A varied programme combined
seminars, visits to municipal authorities, environment and water agencies and leading sustainable corporations. Seminars were held in New Delhi and Mumbai with the theme ‘Low Carbon Environmental Solutions from the UK’ and pre-arranged one-to-one meetings also took place in the same cities. In Kolkata delegates attended
the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Environment Partnership Summit, where three of the attending companies presented papers. Gopal Jeyasundra of Advasol
Management was one of the delegates who took part in the mission. He said: “The trip was very enjoyable and has given us great leads to follow up and I hope we can convert them into good business in the not too distant future.” Another delegate, Edward Shaw
of Castle Pumps, echoed these comments: “It was an incredibly enjoyable trip with a lot of potential for business. I’ll be sure to keep you updated with any developments following the meetings.”
