Brazil is the UK’s most important trading partner in Latin America, with UK exports of goods valued at £523m in 2008

Environmental legislation is just one of many factors. For example, the Sanitation Law 11455/07, Public Consortium Law 11107/05, plus funds from PAC and IDB (Inter American Development Bank) have fostered investments in the sanitation sector over the past two years. The National Waste Policy, where Brazil is

leading the way in Latin America in terms of producer responsibility, principle and adoption of legally binding instruments on logistic reverse; and the recently signed São Paulo state Climate Change Policy, which sets GHG reduction targets of 20 per cent by 2020; will drive Brazilian companies to start seeking out cost-effective environmental technologies across many industry sectors. Given the scale and diversity of the country,

UK companies should initially start with the southeast region of Brazil (São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais states), which offers the best major business opportunities. São Paulo alone has a population bigger than Austria and Belgium and is the centre of much of Brazil’s industry. It has the world’s third largest car fl eet and boasts a major petrochemical area, not to mention its strong industrial development and agricultural activities. Rio de Janeiro will host the 2016 Olympic Games, which will bring major infrastructure works, including land remediation and water treatment, water supply and sanitation. The Minas Gerais state has one of the largest regional projects in the energy sector (£2,467.81 million) from PAC.

Strategic market

Brazil is a strategic priority for EU investors who will continue to spend there. However, it should be viewed as a sophisticated and growing market, where competition is strong but real opportunities do exist. When approaching the market, it is wise to adopt a medium to long- term marketing strategy. Brazilian companies are well-informed at both domestic and international level.
