Market Insight
Brazil
A growing market where competition is strong but real opportunities exist
Brazil is the fi fth largest country in the world by total area and population, the most industrialised nation in Latin America and the eighth largest world economy, with a GDP of US$1.5 trillion in 2008. Brazil’s solid macro-economic policies and strict control of banking operations have stopped the economy from slowing down as much as those of other countries. The Brazilian government announced fi scal
stimulus initiatives to the value of £165 billion in response to the global downturn. This was in addition to the Accelerated Growth Programme (PAC) launched in 2007. Therefore, a total of £320 billion is being invested in the areas of power, transport, housing, water supply and sanitation. Brazilian businesses are fully aware that
their competitiveness is tied to improving the management of their social and environmental impacts. Private companies are looking for low carbon solutions. For example, Brasken, a leading thermoplastic resins company, has developed a certifi ed polyethylene made from sugarcane ethanol. Meanwhile Natura, Brazil’s largest cosmetics manufacturer, launched a carbon neutral programme in 2007 to reduce its GHG emissions.
Opportunities
Current estimates of potential business in the Brazilian environmental technologies sector (solid waste management, water supply and sanitation and air pollution control) and the renewable energy sector are over US$12 billion a year for the next ten years. There are a wide range of factors driving
investment in environmental goods and services (EGS): an increasing number of companies with environmental management systems and the adoption of international standards of environmental performance by exporters and multinational companies.
