ABB wins Turkish contract with help from UKTI

Each of the city’s 200 subterranean wells is now equipped

Meeting with ASKI

ABB, a leading exporter of fl ow measurement equipment to the global water industry, was looking to grow its market in the rapidly developing Turkish water sector. It decided to make use of UKTI’s services and take part in the UKTI and British Water mission to Ankara in October 2008. ABB already had its own local company in Turkey and a number of partners there. However, making face-to-face contact with senior government offi cials and the many water authorities was crucial to growing business in the Turkish water sector. The trade mission was seen as the best way to achieve this. ABB invited a number of water authorities to attend the

actual seminar in Ankara, as well as the one-to-one meetings afterwards. The success of these invitations was clearly a direct refl ection of the good services of UKTI and the Embassy staff in Ankara. The fact that the British Ambassador was involved and gave the opening address also ensured good attendance by government offi cials and allowed the companies who participated in the mission to make contact with a wide range of senior level personnel. It was during the one-to-one sessions, that contact was

made with the Water Authority of Konya, (KOSKI). KOSKI wanted to use water more effi ciently in the ancient city of Konya and saw that ABB had technology that could be used for a specifi c project in the development of wells. At that time KOSKI was using aging mechanical fl owmeters

that were unable to meet the demands of modern water management. To reduce waste and improve its ability to monitor the city’s water supply, the utility company needed new meters and decided to put products from all the leading vendors through a detailed assessment. At the end of the process, it selected ABB’s WaterMaster fl owmeter. ABB WaterMaster fl owmeters were chosen by KOSKI to

accurately measure the consumption and fl ow of water, which is pumped from hundreds of wells in and around the city. In total 200 WaterMaster electromagnetic fl owmeters were used.

with a WaterMaster fl owmeter that enables KOSKI to effi ciently manage Konya’s precious water resources by accurately measuring the volume of water pumped and consumed from each well. The data recorded by the fl owmeters is transmitted continuously in real time to a central SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) system, which can be accessed by the utility company for fl ow management and billing purposes. The success of this business opportunity, along with the

many excellent contacts made during the seminar, has ensured that ABB is now fi rmly on track to achieve further growth within Turkey. There is still a great deal to accomplish and hard work lies ahead, but the success of the UKTI mission enabled ABB to gain a stronger foothold in the Turkish water market.

Terry Mizzi makes a presentation in Turkey

Terry Mizzi, ABB’s Senior Product Sales Manager – Flow

Water Sector – Automation Products, who attended the mission says: “The single biggest advantage of travelling with UKTI was that ABB was able to meet all the key senior decision makers, with appointments arranged by UKTI. On our own many of these key people would not have granted us an interview. This enabled follow-up meetings to be arranged and business to be developed from the key initial meetings.”
