EGYPT

UK companies should act now to prosper in Egypt

Egypt is strategically located in the heart of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region with seaports in the Mediterranean, Red Sea and Suez Canal. This makes it a hub for international trade between Europe, the Middle East and the Far East. Now is the right time for British companies to develop or expand their business in the region. It is politically stable and has a favourable environment with regards to the cost of doing business and the language. Egypt has the largest population in the Arab world (80

million) and this is expected to double in the next 20 years, making it a huge potential market, but the current infrastructure is not suffi cient to support its size.

Egypt has allocated a fi scal stimulus package of LE200

million (approximately £23 million) to support water and wastewater projects. There are various projects to be announced and the Government will seek private sector participation in operating, maintenance, replacement of plants and networks in different provinces, and in connecting houses with networks. There is real scope for UK companies in Egypt, but they

need to invest in research and cultivating relationships now. Egyptian authorities are looking for the latest foreign technology but are unsighted on the latest development. International fi rms should consider looking at Egypt, so they do not miss out on what appears to be a highly promising avenue for investment. Opportunities for UK companies in the water and

wastewater sector in Egypt are broad, covering every area of expertise from technology and equipment supply to consulting and project management. Potentially lucrative fi elds include water and wastewater

There are 31 water and 40 wastewater projects earmarked as part of the fi ve-year plan. The aim is to provide water and sanitation services to 217

cities and 4,600 villages in Egypt. The Government wants to raise production capacity from 20 million cubic metres per day to 28 million cubic metres per day. Main targets are to achieve 100 per cent water coverage by 2017 and 100 per cent wastewater coverage by 2022, as well as upgrade the capacity, service standards and cost recovery of operation and maintenance services.
