olf is more than just a game; it’s a great icebreaker, stress reliever and a relaxing teambuilder. Many corporations and businesses may think

eliminating golf from their program is an easy way to cut costs, when in reality it’s a fairly inexpensive way to accomplish multiple goals.

Whether your attendees are avid golfers or fi rst timers, with the

right approach it can be a successful way to encourage camaraderie and let people get to know one another outside the boardroom and offi ce.

Staff members at most golf courses are experienced in creating customized golf outings that are fun for all levels of players. In plan- ning your event you can solicit the avid golfers to be team captains and assist in making the other inexperienced teammates feel com- fortable. It’s also important to communicate your outing’s purpose so ev-

eryone is comfortable. If some people are adamant about not play- ing, offer them other ways to participate; they can work a contest at a hole or be the photographer and take fun photos of the teams as they play. When holding outings for employees with customers and/or

vendors, approach the outing in the same way, but use your com- pany representatives as team captains and create teams with your business goals in line. For example, pair one of your best customers with a new prospect along with a team member. This is a great way to let your potential customers learn fi rsthand why they should work with you. It gives them an opportunity to get to know your company in a relaxed setting and provides the chance to get to know the people they’ll be working with. Set up a variety of fun contests, best team score, worst team

score, short and long putts and trivia games at holes manned by your employees. Offer different stations throughout the course with snacks, beverages and giveaways to incorporate a theme and your

company brand. Be sure to have goodie bags and/or lunches loaded on the carts,

include tees and golf balls (crucial for your fi rst time and amateur golfers) and drink tickets to redeem at the course’s beverage carts. After the game, have a cookout or banquet at the course to hand

out the prizes and provide another opportunity for people to get to know one another. On their way out, give everyone a team picture from the day or mail it to them after with a save the date for next year!

Award categories can go on and on. Whatever you decide to do to award participants, make it fun.
