Staying fi t is possible when you are on the road Preparing for less-than-ideal fi tness situations
t is hard enough to keep a regular fi tness schedule when you are at home, but traveling can mess up your routine and make it tough to stick to. Your hotel may or may not have a fi tness center and your schedule may be challeng- ing at best, but don’t get discouraged. Despite the seem- ingly endless obstacles, it is possible to maintain your workout routine on the road.
Before you leave home
Before you start packing, call the hotel and fi nd out if they have
a fi tness center or workout equipment. If these amenities are avail- able, fi nd out the hours of operation and the type of equipment available for use. If the hotel does not have a fi tness center or exercise equipment,
fi nd out if they offer free or discounted passes to any facilities near- by. If this is possible, do your homework before packing. Does the fi tness facility offer any exercise classes that will fi t into your sched- ule and what kind of equipment do they offer? By simply knowing what you have to work with, you can pack accordingly. In a gym, normal workout attire is acceptable, but if you must venture outside to complete your fi tness regimen, climate appropriate clothing should be packed. For instance, you may need to bring a rain poncho, sunscreen, a swimsuit, pants or shorts and

possibly even a spring/winter jacket to be comfortable. Planning ahead allows you to expect the unexpected and more importantly, ensures that you will follow through with your plans to stay on track with your workout goals. Make room for workout gear in your suitcase. Regardless of the
climate, remember your running shoes, iPod® and positive mental- ity to keep you going. Motivation is key and partnering up with other attendees to stick to your fi tness goals may prove to be a for- midable motivator. Contact coworkers or friends/acquaintances that will be in attendance at the meeting or event and challenge them to a workout routine that spans the duration of the trip. Before zipping your suitcase shut, give your fi ngers a workout as
you complete online research in search of recreational trails near your destination. Print off maps of walking trails and bike paths or scenic hiking trails in close proximity to your hotel and pack them toward the top of your suitcase. This will prove to be a good fi tness reminder and motivator when unpacking at the hotel, regardless of the fi tness options onsite. Resistance bands are also a good option for light and heavy
packers alike. These bands take up very little space in your suitcase and add virtually no weight. A simple circuit workout can be com- pleted in the comfort of your hotel room any time of day.
