MENC Executive Director John Mahlmann Announces Departure From MENC

At the October 2009 meeting of the MENC National Execu- tive Board, MENC Executive Director John J. Mahlmann announced his decision to resign from MENC after nearly 27 years at the helm of the association. During his tenure, which encompassed more than a quarter of MENC’s existence, he led the organization through a period of substantial member- ship growth and transformed the landscape of music educa- tion through innovative programs and vigorous advocacy.

MENC President Barbara Geer said on behalf of the board, “We are all sorry to hear that John has decided to retire next year from his post as the longest-serving executive director of MENC. But at the same time, we appreciate the energy he devoted to managing the affairs of our organization and shaping the development of our profession.”

“John was the latest of six executives in the history of MENC,” continued Geer, “and served during a time of unprecedented growth in the field of music education and expansion of the influence of our association. The MENC National Executive Board is now developing a plan to guide the search for a new director, and hopes to have a replacement on board when John leaves in April.”

Michael George Honored With Rabin Youth Award

Michael George, who currently serves as execu- tive director of Wisconsin School Music Associa- tion, Wisconsin Music Educators Association and Wisconsin Foundation for School Music has been honored with a 2010 Rabin Youth Arts Award, presented by The Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestras (WYSO) during Arts Day on March 3 at Monona Terrace in Madison. In the presence of Marvin Rabin and a full room of Arts Day attendees, Michael George was designated a winner of the award for artistic achievement.

WYSO awarded the first Rabin Youth Arts Awards in 2001 in honor of their founding conductor, Dr. Marvin Rabin, who remains well known for his inter- national stature as an educator and music specialist, researcher of youth and the arts and founder of three youth orchestra programs (Kentucky, Greater Boston and Wisconsin). As a lifelong advocate for youth arts, he is a vigorous spokesperson for society’s need to recognize the positive and creative accomplishments of young people, as well as the individuals, organizations and businesses that support these artistic efforts. The Rabin Youth Arts Awards continue the legacy of Rabin’s lifelong mission.
