2010 State Music Conference
Happy Anniversary WMEA! That’s right – 2010 marks the 50th
year anniversary of
WMEA. Plans are underway to celebrate this milestone at the Wisconsin State Music Conference. The theme of the conference will be “Celebrating Our Past – Imagining Our Future.” What a wonder- ful opportunity to reflect and celebrate the successful past and set the course for the next 50 years of music education in Wisconsin. Many sessions on a variety of topics were proposed by members of WMEA at the planning session in Janu- ary and WMEA is working to make this a special anniversary conference. Mark your calendars for October 27-30, 2010.
Next Direction for Band
WMEA held the Next Direction for Band workshop in Green Lake on February 19- 21, 2010. The weekend camp-like expe- rience was designed to give current high school students in grades 10-12 working knowledge of what prospective school band directors are expected to accomplish in college and university music education programs. Over 30 high school students worked in a band rehearsal setting along with nationally known director Frederick Speck, CMENC members and WMEA teachers. The high school music students discover the “why” behind rehearsal procedures and learned about the skills necessary to become a successful musician and music educator.
“Working with Dr. Speck... He has such an aura about him and made me think about how I play and why I really want to be a music educator.”
~ High School Senior
“The playing was great, but the conducting and teaching skills taught were definitely the most worthwhile part of the weekend!”
~ High School Junior
“This was the most fun, informative conference I have ever attended.”
~ High School Junior

For each goal, the WMEA Council has developed action plans to accomplish the goals and will continue to modify and update its action plan to meet the needs of the WMEA membership.
WAME
Advocating for school music programs is more important now than ever, especially given the economic climate. Over the past several years, music teachers – and others concerned about the “delivery” of quality music programs to children – have come to count on Wisconsin Advocates for Music Education (WAME) for leadership, information, materials and suggestions
Here is what some students had to say about Next Direction for Band 2010:
“The connections made with other involved musical students and the reflec- tive discussions were wonderful!”
~ High School Student
“Dr. Speck helped me understand why you need to think about the music you are playing. The college students made me see myself in the future.”
~ High School Senior
“I would do it again in a heartbeat. I have learned so much and want to expand my knowledge.”
~ High School Student

Strategic Plan Update
Twice a year, the WMEA Council revisits and updates its goals and strategic direc- tions in order to improve the quality of music education in Wisconsin. The goals that the WMEA has targeted are:
Goal A. Lead advocacy for music education in Wisconsin.
Goal B. Attract and retain quality music educators
Goal C. Provide music educators with meaningful opportunities for
professional development.
Goal D. Promote lifelong learning in music.
for maintaining and improving music education in the state. The group suggests never underestimating the power of music advocacy!
In order to best serve the WMEA member- ship and others that support music educa- tion, WAME will be updating it’s web site resources by updating web content, bringing in video resources, providing text alerts (RSS feeds), creating more exciting links and allowing for social networking capabilities. Look for future improve- ments as WAME modernizes its advocacy web site and continues to be an important and effective aspect of WMEA programs and projects. MENC National Conference
Music Education Week is a new annu- al event created by MENC at the direction of the MENC National Executive Board. It is built around a new format, different from that of past national biennial confer- ences. This format is designed to provide members with opportunities for music education advocacy, intensive profes- sional development and performances during the summer instead of the school year. Music Education Week is scheduled for June 24-29, 2010 in Washington, D.C. There will be many opportunities for pro- fessional development and MENC will also premiere the first MENC National Honors Band, Orchestra, Chorus and Jazz Ensemble. And all school music support- ers are invited to rally for music education at the U.S. Department of Education fol- lowed by a march to Capital Hill and visits to members of congress. Jon Gilliland and Richard Tengowski will be traveling to Washington to represent Wisconsin music teacher. For more information, please visit www.menc.org.
