The facilities made many of us jealous as aesthetic beauty could be found in the hallways, classrooms and in a garden-like outdoor teaching area. While we were not able to see the choral rehearsal that had been

intended, we again found ourselves in con- versation with the Chinese music teachers over very similar questions as those posed to us in Beijing.

The culminating moment for many of us, however, came at our last school visit. Aiju School in Shanghai is a private, el- ementary school highly coveted by fami- lies in this area. One of our local guides

was pleased to be accompanying us to the school since she was hoping to place her four-year old daughter into this school. From the outside entrance, the building looked like many other elementary schools that we had seen, but that comparison stopped at the door. In the entrance hall we encountered a brightly colored mural of cartoon-like characters that would make children anywhere feel welcomed. The hallway and stairwell walls were covered with children’s artwork and photographs of their accomplishments. This was most definitely a school that celebrated chil- dren’s culture and their success. After a tour of the facility, we were ushered into an auditorium-like space. While not a tra- ditional recital hall, or grand stage, it had a raise platform area which provided visual prominence for performance that was ap- propriate to elementary aged students. The
