The Bridge of Music

Teaching music must involve choosing musical selections representing the his- tory of music from around the world. The World Association of Symphony Bands and Ensembles will celebrate 20 years of existence at the July 2011 convention in Taipei. One of the founding members, composer Johan dei Meij (an Austrian composer with Amsted Music) states: “It is always a fascinating experience all over the world to be able to make music within two minutes, with a group of people that don’t speak the same language. But the musical language and one’s gestures are international, and don’t need many words.” Johan has spent the last few months writing music first of Swedish Folk Songs to be premiered in May 2010 in Stockholm, Sweden and currently is researching and writing a commission on Irish folk songs to be premiered in June 2010 in the United States. Both selections demonstrate how we are bridging cultures and living globally through music.
