Wayne Becker
Wayne Becker, 85, passed away on October 17, 2009. Becker was born in Watertown and grew up in Cudahy. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music, but his education was interrupted by service with the U.S. Army during World War II. He met his wife, Mary Lamb, while teaching at Sheboygan’s Central High School. Becker co-founded and directed the Milwaukee British Brass Band, now the Milwaukee Festival Brass, and directed a number of other groups.
Eunice L. Boardman
Eunice L. Boardman, 83, of Rock Island, Illinois, passed away on May 5, 2009 in Bettendorf, Iowa. Boardman was a renowned music educator, trainer and researcher. Acclaimed in her field nationwide, Boardman, who was director of the music department at UW-Madison, remains particularly close in heart to many Wisconsin educators. Among her many honors was receiving the WMEA Distinguished Service Award.
Charles R. Emerson
Charles R. Emerson, 91, of Wausau, passed away on January 13, 2010. Emerson was born May 4, 1918. He was a World War II Army veteran who played for the Army Band and entertained the troops stateside. He was a graduate of Butler University, where he received a master’s degree. He was the long time band director at D.C. Everest High School in Schofield and retired as band director at Nekoosa High School. He enjoyed playing with the Wausau Symphony Orchestra and Wausau, Merrill and Mosinee city bands.
Ralph J. Houghton
Ralph J. Houghton, 89, of Kenosha, passed away on June 1, 2009 at Kenosha Hospital. Houghton is greatly remembered for the positive impact he had on music education throughout Wisconsin and beyond. Through his work in the Kenosha schools, he nourished a music program that became a model for public schools throughout the country. At the state level, he was the driving force with establishing the WSMA High School State Honors Music Project. A library, including many of his personal resources, has been established in Houghton’s honor at the Wisconsin Center for Music Education.
Janice Ann Jacobi
Janice Ann Jacobi, 72, of Fond du Lac, passed away on February 10, 2010 at St. Francis Home. Jacobi graduated from the University of Iowa with a bachelor of arts degree in music. For 45 years, she was employed with the Fond du Lac Public School System as an elementary band teacher. She was active in a variety of organizations, such as Wisconsin Music Teachers Association and Fond du Lac Symphonic Band.
John R. Nygren
John Rollie Nygren, 83, of Luck passed away on March 6, 2010 at United Pioneer Home. He graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1950 with a bachelor of science in music education. He was the music director at Luck High School and also the choral director at Luck Lutheran Church. Nygren was a leading advocate for music in our schools and for WSMA programs. A work of art was donated to WSMA by Nygren and is displayed in the Wisconsin Center for Music Education.
LeRoy A. Wolter
LeRoy A. Wolter, 79, passed away on March 5, 2010. He was a graduate of Cudahy High School, UW- Milwaukee and UW-Madison. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He taught instrumental music in Lodi for one year and Oshkosh for 31 years. Wolter was a member of a WSMA committee, which implemented the Field Rep Program in 1994.
