Rationale:
Accepting the growing diversity of our culture and understanding one another can often be accomplished through mu- sic. Music reflects significant histori- cal events and cultural relationships. By relating music to personal history and culture as well as the history and culture of others, students will under- stand and connect historical events of the world, as well as music’s functions within various cultures.
(Wisconsin’s Model Academic Standards for Music, June 1997.)
You can read many of the specific stan- dards within the category of “History and Culture” in our state standards. It is a perfect rationale for the inclusion of world music in our programs.
Recall from the development of human- ity, that one of the things that separates us from animals is our ability to use art to communicate. We cannot and should
not stop the advancement of technology, but notice how art has become even more integrated in technology. Some people call this the creative economy. Through art, technology has become more user- friendly. For example, some of the best web sites are artistic – visually enticing. Even our home computers are a long way from the black screens and orange or green block lettering of the 1980s. Interfaces are artistic, iconic and user-friendly.
World music is abundant and available more than ever. It is a great way to inte- grate with other subjects, and provides opportunity for unusual voicings. If your choir has three boys and lots of girls, world music is a great way to give everyone a legitimate musical experience.
I love the days when the Internet is down at school – I turn my computer off, leave my office and get connected to the real World Wide Web – people!
