Celebrating Our Past, Imagining Our Future

Throughout time, music educators have strived beyond the status quo and taken on incredible challenges to set new benchmarks for what it means to provide the highest quality in education. It is this perseverance through creative teaching that has enabled music educators to reach milestones in the past and build foundations for the future. In this commemorative issue of Wisconsin School Musician, also dedicated to the 2010 Wisconsin State Music Conference, we celebrate our history, which has progressed us to today, and share ideas for advancing music education and paving our way to an even brighter future.

Dear Administrator...

Imagine a day in the life of your school administrator... so many decisions, so little time and issues continually emerging that require full attention on a moment’s notice. But aside from the everyday challenges, your administrator really wants to connect with teaching staff to better understand is- sues at hand and empower the best decision- making possible on behalf of the school or district. As a music educator, what would you share to showcase the music depart- ment? What tools would you provide to help your administrator connect with the impor- tance of music in our schools? This issue will feature timely articles written from the perspective of the author to the administra- tor, showcasing educational resources, ex- amples of high quality music programs and all around good practices for building and sustaining a quality music program amidst today’s pressures, with benefit to music teachers and administrators alike!

From the first five years of teaching to becoming a seasoned pro, there is much that can be shared and gained every step of the way. This issue of Wisconsin School Musician will empower music teachers at all levels with a cross-sharing of ideas and re- sources for all sorts of topics, ranging from tools for survival and develop- ment of support systems to ways of nurturing, growing and sustaining a music teaching career for genera- tions to come. It’s like exercise for all levels. If there were ever a “Wii” for the music professional, perhaps this issue would be it.
