Oh Yeh, We are nick named “Cow Town” for a reason. event in the world “THE CALGARY STAMPEDE” basi-
Calgary, Alberta (Canada) is situated in Western Can- cally a ten day cowboy party with rodeo events in an
ada just east of the Rocky Mountains. Complete with exposition atmosphere. It is just fitting that a family
ranchers and farms surrounding the City life. Cal- that has numerous horses approached me and asked
gary’s claim to fame is hosting the greatest outdoor if I could paint a portrait of their daughters horse.
The client gave me a CD c/w 25 different
snapshots of poses of this horse. After
a lengthy review I selected the pose that
I thought was most appropriate. Using
Photoshop I cropped out the old particle
board background and printed three cop-
ies of my subject to scale. I had to tape
together multiple pages of 8.5 x 11 to com-
plete the image. Using a sharp #11 X acto
knife I trimmed the excess paper to create a
large scale stencil. Saving the white back-
ground piece for later in this example.

I used a 40” x 40” canvass that I used seven lay-
ers of gesso on sanding between coats to get a
smooth finish. After wiping the canvass clean I
sprayed Auto Air Brite White on top of the Can-
vass. Then I cut small holes into my large scale
reference to give me an area to apply the mask-
ing tape to hold the stencil in place while I did the
background. So I will be using my cut out horse
as a positive stencil to mask the area where the
2
horse will be while I paint the background.
