Alien Helmet
By Patrick Charuel
Materials used: masking tape, degreaser, House of Kolor white and black base coat, medium reducer, Infinity
airbrush, iridescent Auto-air blue and purple. I used a combination of solvent based and water based paints in
this project with no problems at all.

I prepare the helmet by removing all the rubber trim
parts. Depending of the helmet type, it is sometime im-
possible and you will have to mask some of the rubber
trim off with masking tape. The helmet is brand new, fac-
tory black in color. After having removed the stickers, I
sand the original clear with 500 dry grit sand paper. With
mild degreaser, I clean the surface and we are ready to
proceed with the painting process.

Having selected some good reference pictures I print
them off to use as templates. I cut out the main alien
parts and spray those areas with thin white to outline
or locate the parts on the helmet. At this point it’s just
a very rough layout with detail to be added in the up
coming steps of this article.

With my Infinity 0.2 airbrush and thin solvent
white base paint, I start by building slowly the
alien shape. I’m focus on the lighter areas of the
design, the areas that will stand out more when
the design is completed. The white overspray
getting into the darker parts is fine as I will come
back on the darker parts later.
