Joined by our colleagues from the Wicklow branch, a tour was held of Tullynally Castle and gardens in Co. Westmeath, guided by Alex Chisholm, son-in-law of owners Thomas and Valerie Pakenham, Lord and Lady Longford. Other outings included a visit to the gardens of Altamont House in Ballon, Co. Carlow and a talk by the Hon. Desmond Guinness LL.D., (h.c.) (1980) at the Setanta Hotel, Celbridge.

Another outing saw the branch visit the Garda Síochana Museum and Archives in the Records Tower, Dublin Castle, courtesy of Inspector Patrick (Pat) McGee B.Sc. Mgmt. (1996), followed by a guided and very informative tour of the Chester Beatty Library in the nearby Clock Tower building and lunch at the Silk Road Café.

The 13th AGM took place in March and using the branch’s successful formula of a quick AGM, a prolonged ‘wine and cheese’ reception. An interesting speaker – Dr Anthony Malcomson, archivist and historian – spoke of the life and legend of William Sydney Clements, 3rd Earl of Leitrim (1806-78), the subject of his latest book.
