Cork Branch
Our annual outing was to Blackrock Castle Observatory, home to a state-of-the-art exhibition on recent discoveries of extreme life forms on earth and their implications for life in outer space.
At the AGM in November 2008, the late Frederick (Fred) H. Moore M.B., F.R.C.S. Ed. (1944) resigned as Chairman, an offi ce which he had held for 20 years. Mr Gerry Donovan B.A.I. (1963) was elected as the new Chairman. Sadly, Fred passed away in June this year – our sympathies go to his widow, Elma, and to the other members of his family. Fred was instrumental in reactivating the Cork branch which has flourished ever since.
The annual dinner, attended by 56 people, was held in the Rochestown Park Hotel in March. Our guest speaker Senator Ivana Bacik LL.B. (1989) gave an excellent speech on what is happening in College today and her work in the Seanad.
Wicklow Branch
Members toured Wicklow Gaol in June 2009. We were 'welcomed' by the Gaoler (in 1798 period costume) who interrogated each of us in the reception area.
A new exhibition of the life and achievements of Captain Robert Halpin, a native of Wicklow, whose 1860s achievement in connecting the world's continents by submarine telegraph cable, brought about a revolution in communication of a magnitude comparable to that of the internet today.
Kildare and West Wicklow Branch
