BOOKMARKS

This year, 63 primary school students from three TAP linked schools participated in ‘Bookmarks’ – a joint project of TAP and The Ark, A Cultural Centre for Children. ‘Bookmarks’ engages the students in a series of workshops designed to build confidence and develop their skills and creativity through writing and illustrating their own books. At the end of the project the handmade books went on display in The Long Room in Trinity and students were recognised for their achievements at a special awards ceremony with teachers and families in attendance. TAP is grateful for the support received from the TCD Association and Trust for ‘Bookmarks’.

Irish Software Association Award Goes to Computer Science Postgraduate

Computer Science postgraduate student, Conor Gaffney recently received the Irish Software Association Student Medal, awarded for the most commercially viable piece of research. Conor’s research was performed as part of the ADAPT research project – a collaborative project involving the Computer Science Department and the Psychiatry Department in Trinity, which researches the use of personalised simulation to achieve more effective and efficient soft skills learning and training.

Trinity International Development Initiative

The Trinity International Development Initiative (TIDI) – promoting research and teaching in International Development, was launched in February 2009. As part of the initiative, a Doctoral Training for Development in Africa Programme was also launched. TIDI aims to increase both research on international development and partnerships between Trinity and universities and other institutions in low and middle income countries. The flagship project within this Programme is the International Doctoral School in Global Health (Indigo). For one of TIDI's projects see 'Into Africa' on page 28.

Ireland’s First ‘Next-Generation’ DNA Laboratory Opens in Trinity

A new Genome Sequencing Laboratory was opened by Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation, Conor Lenihan T.D. in the Institute of Molecular Medicine in Trinity Centre for Health Sciences on the St James’s Hospital campus.

The a new cutting-edge DNA sequencing laboratory will enable research into psychiatric disorders, cancers, infectious diseases and conditions affecting the immune system.
