Celebrating 60 Years of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

Amnesty International and The Irish Times, in association with Trinity College, marked the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights with a series of reading evenings in the company of some of the best known Irish based authors last December. The writers included: Roddy Doyle, Colm Toibín, Anne Enright B.A. (1985), John Boyne B.A. (1993), Gerry Stembridge, Neil Jordan, Jennifer Johnston Litt.D. (h.c.), hon. F.T.C.D. (1992), Seamus Heaney Litt.D. (h.c.) (1988), and the late Frank McCourt.


Environmental Engineering Provides Safe Drinking Water in Kenya

The fi rst full-scale continuous fl ow solar disinfection system for a village community has been installed in Ndulyani in the Mutomo area of Kenya to supply safe drinking water for approximately 600 people.

The system has been developed over several years by successive research students under the supervision of Laurence Gill B.Sc. (1989), in the Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering. The aim of the pilot project is to demonstrate the appropriateness of the technology – the robustness of the system, ease of installation and operation – and the acceptance of the system by the local community.

The Trinity Year – A Portrait of Trinity College Dublin

A book celebrating Ireland’s oldest university was launched in the Long Room earlier this year. In a compilation of text and pictures by author, Fergus Mulligan Ph.D. (2002) and photographer, John Jordan, the book follows the academic year, refl ecting the students’ experience as the facets of College life unfold – from the ebullience of Fresher’s week through all the activities of learning and leisure until examination and graduation. Trinity Week 2009

Energy and Sustainability was the theme of an exciting programme of symposia, events, fi lms, debates, trails, and workshops during Trinity Week 2009. Organised by Trinity’s Faculty of Engineering, Mathematics and Science, Trinity Week events were free and open to the public.

Highlights of the week included a series of fi lms shown on climate change and trails, a biodiversity trail, visits to Trinity’s new Astronomy Observatory, Geology and Zoology Museums, and a number of community outreach events.
