28 VACUUMS, COLLECTORS & SWEEPERS

Hako cleans up for councils The Hako-Citymaster 2000 sweeper is fast becoming a firm

favourite for many towns and cities up and down the United Kingdom as they look for a tailor-made street cleaning solution, says the Rugby-based company. “Despite the economic downturn Hako is enjoying recent success of securing contracts in supply of their eco-friendly road sweepers,” explained company spokesman Andrea Seed.Designed for all year round use the Hako Citymaster 2000 offers cleaning solutions in narrow restricted areas as well as larger open spaces. The sweeper can be adapted to cope with winter tasks, including the distribution of salt and grit and ploughing or brushing snow. A pressure washer and a hand held suction hose can be added for use in more difficult environments. The Hako Citymaster 2000 was the choice for Rossendale Borough Council who purchased three machines earlier this year. Craig Swift, Street Cleaning Supervisor explained: “The overall performance of the machine together with the ease of operation was immediately apparent. We have quite a few high kerbs in Rossendale and the Citymaster 2000’s tyres give us good ground clearance. Together with a big payload, large clean water tank and superior brushes the machine offers excellent value for money.”

In order to ensure that there is no exhaust of water or spray mist from the top of the machines which would dirty parked cars or worse still pedestrians there is a double skin which directs the air down underneath the machine and back towards the collection hood. Typical pavement clearing operation would see operatives blowing leaves out from the pavement and from around parked cars into the path of the advancing machine where they would be swept up by the brush head which unlike a road sweeper sucks up across the full 2m working width. Echo Bear Cat recently introduced two hitch-mounted debris

loaders, ideal for the removal of leaves, litter and debris into a truck. “Designed for one man operation, the new debris loaders are equally at home on the golf course, or in the city centre,” says the company’s Sue Lewis. Suitable for use either with a pick up or dump truck, the DL8390 model is powered by a 390cc Honda GX engine, producing

amount of suction to be able to dissipate the velocity. The unit can tackle a wide range of tasks and fits onto tractors, trailers and utility vehicle; a range of heads is available for different applications.”The T400 Complete Collection System comprises a purpose-built tipping collector, with a dropdown trailed arm and 5 metre wander hose mounted onto a gantry system. Deborah says: Its compact design makes it particularly suited for work in confined areas as well as open spaces. Being PTO-driven means there are no extra exhaust emissions or fuel costs and because the galvanised collector is a vented, enclosed unit, debris is contained and not blowing about. The fact that the vacuum mulches the collected matter also means that a much greater quantity can be collected. TaskA-Vac can generally be used in its

Hako Machines also offers customers the choice of used

machines fully tested by its own technicians. One customer to take advantage of this offer is Glynn Evans, Street Scene Area Manager, Warrington Borough Council who recently purchased four refurbished Citymaster 2000 models. Glynn said: “We were looking for a sweeper with the ability to remove heavy silt. This versatile small compact cleaner is ideal and offers excellent manoeuvrability with its four wheel steering. Our Citymaster 2000 operators have commented that the machines are very comfortable and easy to use. Hako’s competitive price and after-sales support was a factor in our purchasing decision.”

Swindon’s cycle paths get a Swingo sweep Clearing Swindon’s 84 kilometres of dedicated cycle paths of

potentially dangerous debris requires a combination of the power and efficiency of a large street sweeper and the manoeuvrability of a smaller compact machine. When leaves fall in the autumn and get wet in the rain, the potential hazard increases. Wet leaves on the paths are slippy and they can block drainage channels and gratings, leading to localised flooding. Swindon Borough Council has overcome the problem by using a Schmidt Swingo compact sweeper, dedicated to the cycle paths.“The Swingo has many similarities to a truck sweeper,” says Street Cleansing Contracts Manager Rob Core. “It has the powerful brushes and suction to remove a lot more than litter and dry leaves and a large waste hopper, and yet it is compact and very manoeuvrable when tackling street furniture and trees. “

suction of 66 cu.m/min via a 405mm four-blade radial fan with 10mm thick blades. The 3.6m flexible pick up hose is fitted with a lightweight aluminium handle, allowing the operator to easily direct the 200mm diameter suction nozzle. “The 200mm discharge tube is multi- positional, enabling the precise placement of collected debris, and the hitch mount design allows complete access to the tailgate without having to detach, or even move the machine around, to help the operator be time efficient,” explains Sue Lewis. The slightly larger DL 10570, powered by a 570cc Briggs & Stratton V-Twin engine, is equipped with a 254mm diameter suction nozzle for fast and efficient collection. Available for both models is an optional swing-away hitch mount kit which adds length for increased clearing area, and a light kit to facilitate night time debris removal. TaskA-Vac has been designed as a complete collection system, designed and manufactured by CTM , whose Deborah Brown explains: “We wanted to make an economical vacuum to create a maximum

‘SUTON’ trade name have launched the Mega Vac bulk debris collector/blower system for mounting onto a trailer or truck.Power is supplied by a 6.5hp Briggs & Stratton engine and suction through a flexible 6m x 15cm diameter hand held wander hose. This unit is adaptable to fit any type of mounting the customer requires and is ideal for the quick clearing of bulky leaves and general litter. Debris is taken directly through the fan unit, reducing its bulk to use the capacity of the collecting unit to the maximum. The vacuum can also be used to blow debris as well as collect. In response to increasing pressure on Groundscare and Local Authority personnel to tackle leaf and litter collection.
