VACUUMS, COLLECTORS & SWEEPERS 27 The Grass Group
Click here to request literature Restricted areas Broadwood International aims to cut the effort involved in
sweeping restricted areas around buildings and in pedestrianised zones with the BroomEx range of walk-behind rotary
brooms. As the Honda or Briggs and Stratton engine powers both the rotating brush and the driving wheels, the operator simply steers the unit, in similar fashion to a lawnmower, adjusting the drive speed, brush rotation speed and height of brush from the operating position. There is a choice of four brush widths – 0.7m, 0.8m, 1m and 1.2m – while all models are finished in three-layer lacquered paintwork similar to the finish used in the automotive industry, for surface protection from corrosion. Roy Wolfenden, manager of Broadwood International says: “There are many instances where traditional methods of sweep-up just don’t do the job, in particular the problem of wet leaves in autumn. Because of the rotary action and durable polypropylene bristles of the BroomEx, wet leaves are just flicked up and swallowed by the hopper in one pass across the surface.”For tight spaces and instances where access is a problem, the manoeuvrable BroomEx PZ80 comes into its own, as it can turn in its own length, while offering an 80cm sweeping width.
Clean up this Winter Leaf and litter solutions are available to suit all types of amenity
application, suggest the manufacturers. Specifying the right machine is down to the situation in which it will be used and issues such as the type of material being collected, surface and health and safety requirements says Jane Carley
LARGE AREAS Turfmech’s TM5 high-tip vacuum collector is designed to carry out
safe, fast and effective collection and removal of leaves, litter, and other loose surface debris from a wide range of open spaces, explains Austin Jarrett. “The TM5’s design and operation are inherently safe due to a number of features. There are no external moving components or discharge risks to the operator or bystanders and it has a wide wheelbase and low centre of gravity ensuring maximum safety and stability when collecting or emptying, even at full tip height. This machine is also fully guarded to meet all current and future envisaged Health and Safety Regulations.” When used in busy areas such as parks, the use of low noise, high
efficiency vacuum turbine technology developed initially for Turfmech’s range of Tornado debris blowers, protects bystanders, suggests Austin, adding: “This is further enhanced by the use of a glass- reinforced plastic (GRP) hopper in place of the previously-used sheet steel hopper. This has cut noise levels by around 50 per cent due to GRP’s sound-deadening characteristics and the reduction in internal drumming. A flexible wander hose can be specified, removing the need to use brushes and shovels to collect material in confined or enclosed areas close to buildings, walls, hedges and other obstacles. “As well as eliminating bending, reaching and stretching, the debris collection vacuum hose also makes the emptying of litter bins far safer for operatives,” comments Austin. Among the most recent improvements made to the TM5 are a boost to the suction produced at the 1.7m wide collection head and an increase in the 5 cu.m capacity hopper’s maximum tip angle for faster emptying, particularly of damp material.

slopes, quicker hopper lift/lower cycles and an improvement to the manual change-over valve to reduce the time taken when switching from normal collection to using the optional 6m side wander hose. The wander hose assembly has been improved by the fitting of a nylon roller at the intake end of its nozzle, designed to help support the weight of the hose while keeping the nozzle at an optimum height above the ground. Local authorities are faced by a wide variety of sites, surfaces,
types and volumes of material to collect, says Tim Merrell of Trilo distributor The Grass Group. “Our smallest and perhaps most widely used machine is the SU40b Truck Loader. Developed in response to customer requests, the SU40b was designed to lift leaves straight from the ground and into the back of a truck with the minimum amount of manual handling. These machines are built in towed form to avoid

having to lift them onto the tailgate, and the hose is supported by an articulated arm, with a large wheel on the bottom of the tube, to reduce weight for the operator.” A bigger and more powerful version, the Trilo SU60, means quicker collection of large piles of leaves. It has an electric start V-twin engine which can be run at a lower rpm reducing engine noise and reducing fuel consumption. Tim comments: “The truck loaders can be used for collecting litter as well and are particularly effective after events and at fly tipping sites where there is a large concentration of litter that would otherwise have to be picked up by hand.” The tractor drawn SG400 is a high tip 4 cu.m capacity machine and is designed to be manoeuvrable enough to work in small parks or those with restricted access. Being high tip it can be emptied either into a skip or into the back of a truck or trailer for rapid road transport of the material collected to the disposal
site. The bigger SG1170 and SG1100 have the most powerful fans and the largest capacity, 11 cubic metres of compacted material. “These machines are used by Local Authorities on grass areas and to supplement road sweeping activities during the leaf season.
are the new KV and MV models. The KV has taken over the old KD range and now has a five-bladed serrated impeller which is designed to maximise suction and debris reduction. This vacuum collector is now specified with a non zip bag sealed with a marine style clasp said to open and closes easily when emptying the full load. There is a choice of 6hp Briggs and Stratton or 6.5hp Honda engine, and the KD is available as a push or self propelled model. Sweep width is 68cm. Developed for heavy commercial workloads, the MV has a 74cm sweep with an adjustable feed opening which can be set from the operator’s position for turf and hard surfaces or completely closed when using optional hose. It is fitted with a strong six-blade impeller for maximum suction and debris reduction. Impeller housing components are now made from a composite material designed to be more abrasion resistant than steel, offering reduced weight and additional durability while being rust free. For easy emptying the MV features a top loading bag which slides out on rails. Pinnacle Power’s Joan Watson comments: “Billy Goat are continually improving on every aspect of their range, all machines are very well balanced for easy manoeuvrability, and vibration is always kept to a minimum. The improved impeller and the design of the machines will easily cope with all types of debris from leaves to tin cans and even bottles.
