The demands of a 20 acre housing development have resulted in two new pitches for Sudbury RUFC & having hired pitch constructors J Pugh-Lewis to laser-grade, drain and re-seed the new pitches club member Stuart Marston extended their brief to include the pitch-side and boundary fencing.

Pugh-Lewis says that the company has been using GPS since the end of 2007. “Once we’ve completed the design work we can upload this onto the GPS in order to set it all out quickly and accurately on site”. At Sudbury it was used for setting out everything from the position of the drains and

complete, J Pugh-Lewis laser graded before trenching in the floodlight cabling and installing a comprehensive drainage system of pipe drains and sand slits. The company then cultivated the two new pitches and ameliorated them with sand, prior to seeding in August 2008. The club wanted to leave the pitches to grow-in for at least 12 months, which gave J Pugh-Lewis time to complete their extended contract.

Moving the conveyor in this way opens up a massive inspection port should the need arise to look inside the housing. In the working position the tractor driver can adjust the working height of the conveyor hydraulically.

groundsman Jonathan Calderwood says that his Scotts iTurf programme keeps Villa Park’s 98% sand pitch in top condition.“Our Scotts programme begins with the Greenmaster Pro-Lite range in the summer with 12-0-12 and in the winter with 7-0-14 Double K for potash. Greenmaster liquids are ideal for giving the pitch an extra boost when it’s required. This is also backed up with Sierrablen Plus slow-release granular applications every eight weeks.“We keep disease at bay using Daconil, Heritage and Banner MAXX fungicides.“Greenmaster Blade biostimulant helps encourage new grass development during July, August and September and we apply STEP Hi-mag three times a year – after renovation, again in October and finally in spring, together with a trace element package.” On the overall results recently voted

Jonathan,

‘Groundsman’s Groundsman of the Year’ in the IOG awards, says: “We have superb winter colour and believe the Scotts range is the best available for a demanding pitch like ours.“
