Problems With Your Prostate? The Computer Will See You Now

The power to maintain good

prostate health lies in your diet, he tells Newsmax. Eat a healthy diet free of refined foods, especially refined sugar; manage your body fat percentage; bump up your intake of fruits and veggies; and choose “healthy” fats that rev up your body.

Software is the latest go-to for doctors, as detecting abnormalities goes high tech. ::

BY DAVID ALLIOT B

ack in september, when the Food and Drug Administration approved use of a new method to

help detect prostate abnormalities, it wasn’t a novel blood test or new form of imaging. In fact, it was something as

unrelated as it was unusual: software. Called Paige Prostate, the software

is the first of its kind designed to identify an area of interest in biopsy tissue slides with the highest likelihood of harboring cancer. It works by carefully and

thoroughly analyzing slide images that have been digitized with a scanner. The FDA approved use of the software after examining data that showed improved outcomes. When the software was used

alongside doctors, fewer abnormalities were missed than with doctors alone. That’s good news because behind

skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer among men. So, why does this walnut-sized

gland stir up so much trouble as men age? The answer is simple: It keeps growing. The prostate, located below

the bladder, is part of the male reproductive system that helps produce semen. As a natural part of aging, most

males will slowly begin to experience prostate issues such as enlargement, aka benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), prostatitis (inflammation), or even cancer. These conditions affect 40%-50% of men older than 50. As it grows, the prostate begins

pressing on the urethra (the tube that connects the bladder to the penis), and then difficulty urinating frequently follows. But medical specialists caution it

doesn’t have to be cancer, even if there is discomfort. Many in the medical community

agree nature has the weapons to fight back. Dr. David Brownstein, board- certified family physician and author of Dr. David Brownstein’s Natural Way to Health newsletter, is one of them.

TURN TO NATURE Among the many natural ways to keep your prostate fit, Brownstein advises key nutrients that are as powerful as they are important. “Nature’s potent supplements can lower inflammation and promote a healthy prostate gland,” he says. And all are available without a

prescription. Beta-sitosterol. A plant-based substance that researchers have linked with inhibiting tumor cell growth in prostate cancer cells, beta-sitosterol occurs naturally in nuts and seeds. Saw palmetto. According to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, “Laboratory studies show that saw palmetto works by countering effects of male sex hormones such as testosterone and DHT,” which have been shown to have an enlarging effect on the prostate. Pomegranate extract. In studies of

men with recurrent prostate problems, researchers found that pomegranate extract significantly slowed the rate of prostate growth. Research points to its anti-inflammatory benefits. Boswellia extract. According to

a study published in the journal Cancer Research, Boswellia extract suppressed prostate tumor growth, also due to its anti-inflammatory properties. Zinc. Studies point to the fact that

zinc levels are low in men with prostate cancer, and zinc has been shown to suppress prostate cancer cell growth.
