on voight is searching for something. The Academy Award
winner is trying to explain what compelled him, like a moth drawn to a candle, to journey to Israel and pro- duce his fascinating new
10-part documentary series exploring the deep and powerful mysteries of the Holy Land. Then he recalls a line from his 2005 role as
Pope John Paul II. It brought him an Emmy nomination, and amazingly, Voight can still recite it. “I did a series as Pope John Paul II,” Voight
tells Newsmax, referring to the great holy war- rior who stood with Ronald Reagan and Mar- garet Thatcher to bring down the “evil empire” of the Soviet Union to end the Cold War. “And some reporter once asked him, ‘Would you go to Israel?’ “And he said — and I used these words in
the movie — ‘It is my deepest personal desire to go to the Holy Land and to pray at the most important places, which from ancient times have seen God’s interventions and the won- ders He has done.’ Those wonderful words! I was so proud to say them! “And you know,” the Oscar winner recalls,
“I’m exploring that. We’re exploring ‘the won- ders God has done’ in the land of Israel.” To create his unprecedented series on the
Holy Land, Voight and his producers jour- neyed to Israel with two Orthodox rabbi schol- ars, plus another rabbi who gives tours in Is- rael. Together they visited the unforgettable
archaeological sites still standing today that document the grand, centuries-long history of Israel’s formation, destruction, and rebirth fol- lowing World War II. Voight takes viewers on a tour of the Tem-
