Why aren’t Americans having babies? A few possible reasons.


The U.S. birth rate has fallen by 20%, from 69.3 births per 1,000 women in the childbearing group


in 2007 to 55.8 in 2020. There is no clear explanation for this, after the 2008 Great Recession abated. Fertili- ty always decreases in economic downturns. But it traditionally revives afterward. This time there has been no comeback. Furthermore, the drop-off in fertility has happened among women of all childbearing ages, ethnicities, and income levels.


Birth rates were stable for the period between 1980 and 2007, hovering at 65-70 births per 1,000


women between ages 15 and 44.


Furthermore, successive generations of women all had fewer children than the one before. This suggests that, absent some major change, the problem of low birth rates will only get worse.

Working-class marriages have declined even more than the general number.
