Just One Less Hour a Day of Sitting Reduces Risk for Diabetes

ost people spend most of their day sitting, and that


lack of activity increases the risk of lifestyle diseases such as Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Researchers from Finland’s University of Turku divided sedentary and physically inactive adults who were at increased risk of Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases into two groups and monitored their activity. One group maintained their usual sedentary lifestyle while the second group reduced their sedentary time by about 50 minutes a day, mainly by increasing their amount of light- and moderate-intensity physical activity. Within three months, researchers observed improved blood sugar regulation, insulin sensitivity, and liver health in the less sedentary group. “It is an encouraging thought that health benefi ts can be achieved by reducing the time spent sitting and increasing


GREEN TEA EXTRACT LOWERS BLOOD SUGAR Ohio State University researchers studied the eff ects of green tea extract in healthy men and women and those at risk for heart disease and diabetes. All participants took a gummy containing green tea extract (the equivalent of five cups of green tea) for 28 days, then took 28 days off , and spent another 28 days taking a placebo. Fasting blood glucose levels were significantly lower in all participants after they took the green tea extract.

researchers at Newcastle University. When study participants took three ounces of a whey supplement (15 grams of protein) 10 minutes before meals they experienced two hours more of normal blood sugar daily compared to when they did not take the supplement. In addition, their daily blood glucose levels were lower. “We believe the whey protein


works in two ways,” said senior investigator Daniel West, Ph.D. “Firstly, by slowing down how quickly food passes through the digestive system, and secondly, by stimulating a number of important hormones that prevent the blood sugars climbing so high.”
