ore than 1.6 million americans are diagnosed with cancer every year, and nearly 600,000 die from it, making it the second leading cause of death, after heart disease.
We know that the leading risk factors are smoking,
getting too much UV radiation from the sun or tanning beds, being overweight or obese, and drinking too much alcohol. According to the Prevent Cancer Foundation,
approximately 50% of cancers can be prevented by modifi able lifestyle changes, including:
MARINATE MEATS BEFORE GRILLING. Cooking at high temperatures is known to produce cancer- causing chemicals. “Research shows that
diets high in red and processed meat increase the risk of colorectal cancer,” says Sheena Patel Swanner, a registered dietitian nutritionist with the American Institute for Cancer Research. “And grilling meat,
red or white, at high temperatures forms potent, cancer-causing substances.” These substances,
called heterocyclic amines and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, can be reduced by avoiding or cutting back on red meat. Also, marinating meat
before grilling and adding the herbs rosemary and thyme can reduce the amount of cancer-causing compounds that are produced.

FILTER YOUR WATER.
Carcinogens often lurk in tap water, Tasha Stoiber, Ph.D., a senior scientist at the Environmental Working Group, tells Newsmax. “They may be
present at levels in tap water that are legal by government standards but may still pose health risks,” she says. Some of these
chemicals include hexavalent chromium, or chromium-6 — made notorious by the film Erin Brockovich — and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, which accumulate in the body and never break down in the environment. The EWG
recommends researching your tap water and then buying the appropriate filter to remove the off ending chemicals.

AVOID ARTIFICIAL
SWEETENERS. For years, studies have linked aspartame to cancer, and now there is evidence of a specific link to leukemia and lymphoma, says Daryl Gioff re, a board-certified chiropractor and author of Get Off Your Sugar. “A 2022
study from PLOS Medicine of more than 100,000 French adults found that the group with the highest intake of artificial sweeteners were 13% more likely than non- consumers to be diagnosed with cancer.”

CHECK LABELS OF CLEANING
PRODUCTS. Many cancer-causing contaminants can be found in everyday cleaning products. These include
formaldehyde, benzene, nitrosamines, and 1,4-dioxane, according to Samara Geller, senior director of cleaning science at EWG. “Another way you may
be exposed to formaldehyde is from volatile organic compounds called terpenes that are found in pine and citrus-based cleaners,” she warns.
Geller advises avoiding cleaners that do not disclose the types of preservatives used and to look for the EWG’s seal of approval. “The EWG verified
cleaning products program places strict limits on hazardous impurities and requires full ingredient transparency.” For more information,

STEER CLEAR OF PEANUTS
AND CORN. Gioff re warns that these two foods contain fungal toxins that produce aflatoxin, which is a potent carcinogen especially known to cause liver cancer. “I call them both
the most acidic and dangerous foods you can put in your body,” he says. Peanut butter
is even worse than whole peanuts, Gioff re explains, because manufacturers take the prettier peanuts with fewer molds and use those for cocktail peanuts. “Consequently, the
peanuts with the most fungus and aflatoxin are mashed up and made into peanut butter,” he says. If you eat peanut butter, keep it refrigerated to stop any fungus that may be present from multiplying.
