YOUR MEDICAL QUESTIONS ANSWERED

Should I Be Using Peptides?

A friend has been using peptides for her skin. What are they, and should I be using them?

— James P., Hudson, Mass.

Peptides are groupings of amino acids, which is what proteins are made from. They send signals to every cell in every organ of the body instructing the cells on how to behave in various situations. They help cells clean up toxins, improve immune function, help you lose weight, improve your libido, decrease the risk of chronic illnesses, and lessen the negative eff ects of the aging process overall. There are hundreds of peptides and you may benefi t from some of them, but I recommend that you speak with a healthcare provider who is familiar and has experience with their use.

A friend swears by a supplement line that has helped her with her health, but it’s expensive. How can I know if I need supplements? — Robert J., Central Falls, R.I.

Before buying expensive supplements, improve your diet and lifestyle. If you still need supplements, be sure to purchase those that are manufactured in a reliable facility and are supported by reliable scientifi c data. If the results you expect aren’t there within three months, you may want

As I get older my hangovers get worse. What can I do to decrease the eff ects? — Marjorie P., Scranton, Pa.

More and more scientifi c studies are showing that alcohol is toxic to your system, and your hangover situation is an example of your body screaming for help. Instead, hydrate by drinking 2-3 liters of alkaline water daily, eat lean, sustainable proteins, and avoid processed foods. If you do choose to drink, limit yourself to 1-2 drinks a week and choose a clean spirit like tequila. Avoid sugary drinks such as wine or mixed cocktails and beer.

My mom has had a thyroid problem for many years. My bloodwork was normal. Are there natural ways to keep my thyroid healthy? — Martin B., Grangeville, Idaho

Your thyroid aff ects everything from temperature modulation to weight, so it is important to keep it healthy. Your thyroid hormones help balance your metabolism, which keeps the rest of your body functioning optimally. The thyroid is important for brain function, immunity, mood, energy, and digestive function. Adding foods to your diet that contain iodine, copper, selenium,

to switch supplements and consult your provider for recommendations. Everyone’s needs are diff erent.

and zinc — including lean proteins, eggs, legumes, seaweed, and nuts — will help support your thyroid.

I get bloated and feel belly pain often when I eat. Is there a supplement that may help?

— Graham F., Knoxville, Tenn.

People complain about this often and it is likely connected to your diet — you are what you eat — and that is why you feel sick when you don’t eat foods your body likes. Pay attention to what foods you eat before you get bloated and feel pain. Try eliminating them from your diet and see how you feel when you don’t eat them. Usually, dairy, spicy foods, coff ee, alcohol, fried foods, and junk foods cause the symptoms you suff er with. If you still want some supplement help, I recommend using a digestive enzyme prior to meals.

I work from home and spend most days wearing wireless headphones to make calls or listen to music. Am I at risk of getting a brain tumor? — Robert C., Charleston, S.C.

We are exposed to low doses of radiation all the time, everywhere — in our water, food, in the security at the airport — and even when we soak in the sun. The amount of radiation emitted from wireless headphones is less than what a cellphone emits, which we are exposed to on a daily basis. There is no scientifi c data to date to lead us to believe that wireless headphones cause brain tumors. Having said that, maybe use your cellphone and earphones less.
