Surprising Benefits of CoQ10

Think you know all there is to know about this amazing nutrient? Think again. :: BY DAVID ALLIOT

oq10 has proved itself to be a powerhouse cell protector that may benefi t a wide variety of ailments from heart conditions to diabetes to Parkinson’s to cancer. Coenzyme Q10, to give it its full name, is an antioxidant that your

body produces naturally and your cells use for growth and maintenance. Levels of CoQ10 in your body decrease as you age, says the Mayo Clinic. CoQ10 levels have also been found to be lower in people with certain conditions, such as heart disease, and in those who take cholesterol-lowering drugs called statins. CoQ10 is found in meat, fi sh and nuts, but not in amounts to signifi cantly

increase levels in your body. Now a new body of research has uncovered even more potential — as well as a reminder of its importance in overall health.

BOOSTS PEAK PERFORMANCE A 2018 study investigated the

eff ects of CoQ10 on physical activity. Those supplementing with 1,200 mg of CoQ10 per day for 60 days showed an increase in lean muscle mass and a decrease in oxidative stress. “CoQ10 can also be a benefi t to

those with muscular disorders,” David Brownstein, M.D., tells Newsmax. “CoQ10 levels are highest in

muscular tissue.” Brownstein is one of the foremost practitioners of holistic medicine in the United States and the author of the Dr. Brownstein’s Natural Way to Health newsletter.

MIGRAINE MITIGATION In a 2017 study, CoQ10 defi ciency

was observed in people who suff er from migraines. When 100 mg of the powerhouse nutrient was added to their current regimens, there was an overall greater than 50% reduction in migraine frequency.

INFLAMMATION FIGHTER A 2020 dive into multiple studies

determined that CoQ10’s role as a powerful antioxidant “has proved to

be of potential use as a treatment in diseases in which oxidative stress is a hallmark,” including “kidney disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, non-alcoholic, fatty liver disease.”

HEART PROTECTOR CoQ10 has been shown to

improve heart conditions like high blood pressure by neutralizing free radicals. In a 2018 study, it was shown to prevent the formation of heart-stopping blood clots. It’s even benefi cial after the fact: “CoQ10 is even helpful for patients who have had heart failure,” Brownstein says. “It plays a critical role in reducing infl ammation.”

5 HEALTHIER SKIN

In 2015, researchers set out to prove a hunch, and they found that CoQ10 applied directly to your skin can reduce damage from free radicals by increasing

energy production in skin cells through antioxidant protection.

REGULATES BLOOD SUGAR Good news for diabetics. A

2014 study tested CoQ10 and found it improved insulin sensitivity to help regulate blood sugar levels. Another study showed that CoQ10 signifi cantly reduced A1C (average blood sugar levels).

GUM HEALTH CoQ10 defi ciency has long been

seen in patients with overall poor gum health. A 2015 study found a marked improvement in gum health in those who supplemented with CoQ10.

BRAIN FITNESS Brains are very sensitive to

oxidative stress due to their high- fat content and high demand for oxygen. This leads to cell damage in the brain, which in turn triggers devastating diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Studies suggest that CoQ10 has

the ability to reduce the amount of damaging plaque formation in brain cells, resulting in improved behavior in dementia patients.

9

CANCER PREVENTION Oxidative stress causes cell

damage, which can lead to cancers of all types. Since CoQ10 protects against cell damage, many theorize that COQ10 will play a pivotal role in defeating cancer. In fact, many studies show low levels

of CoQ10 have been associated with up to a 53% higher cancer risk.

EASES STATIN SIDE EFFECTS

Statin drugs can be harsh — side eff ects include muscle weakness and pain. In fact, statins actually lower levels of all-important CoQ10 in your body. Many patients report these side eff ects were minimized when supplementing with CoQ10.
