Michael Savage
Born: Bronx, New York, 1942 Education: Master’s degrees in medical
botany and medical anthropology, University of Hawaii. Ph.D. in nutritional ethnomedicine, University of California. Authored: 44 books, some under his
given name Michael Weiner, including nine New York Times bestsellers, on politics, culture, tree planting, beer tasting, nutritional cooking, cocaine addiction, cancer, arthritis, and other topics. The Savage Nation: His radio show had 10 million weekly listeners. The London Telegraph ranked him as “one of the most influential conservatives in the U.S.”
SAVAGE ON HIS HEART ATTACK “They told me I almost died, it was touch and go. I prayed on the way into the operating room. I thought it was indigestion. I got into a fight with the intake nurse. I wanted to call the cardiologist. She made me start
checking in with some moron at the front desk. I said, ‘Are you crazy? I’m having a heart attack.’ They called security on me. They put me on fentanyl and God knows what else, stripped my clothing off , then in come two guards about 6-foot- 10 and they look at me lying down, and they’re like, ‘He’s the one causing the trouble?’ As they’re wheeling me in for the stent, I start repeating in Hebrew: ‘Hear, oh Israel, the Lord our God is the Lord is one,’
and I repeat that and I say, ‘As I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil.’ When it was over the doctor, who was a young Hispanic guy, magna cum laude out of Harvard Medical School who did a brilliant job, told my wife I was mumbling. Mumbling? I was praying! This is an example of the disconnect between spirit prayer and modern medicine. I mean, listen, they both
work. Did he understand that the prayer kept me alive, perhaps along with his skills as a surgeon?”
SAVAGE ON RADIO “Savage Nation took off like a rocket. I was able to get away with anything I wanted to do in radio because I was so hot, and I didn’t use dirty words. I’m not Howard Stern.
I didn’t revert to the level of filth and vulgarity to attract an audience.”
SAVAGE ON RUSH “I won’t say anything about him because he’s dead. He did what he did, and he was very good at what he did. I took it in a diff erent direction. Kind of a ‘man in the street.’ And it wasn’t programmed. It wasn’t Republican National Committee talking points. Let’s leave it at that.”
SAVAGE ON TEDDY “Teddy (pictured above) died last year, my loyal companion, the mascot of The Savage Nation. It was a huge, terrible loss around Thanksgiving. I cried my heart out and when you’re through crying, there’s no tears left, there’s an emptiness. A wise woman named Janet, who was asked, ‘Why do pets die before us?,’ she said, ‘God set it up that way because if it was the other way around, they’d be left alone with no one to take care of them.’”
