Like pretty much every other
malady, risk rises with age. “If you’re of a certain age
and wake up with aches and pains, or maybe a bit stiff , you almost certainly have chronic infl ammation,” Gill says.
WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT Since chronic infl ammation is a symptom of modern life and aging, it’s a good idea to assume that you have some degree of it. And the best way to fi ght it is to do what you can to eliminate, or at least curtail, some of the triggers: Diet: Since processed foods tend
to be loaded with additives that can agitate the immune system, try to eat mostly organic whole foods, grass-fed
beef, and products from pasture- raised animals. If buying packaged foods, read
the ingredient labels and go with options that have the least amount of additives, including sugar in its many forms and artifi cial sweeteners. If your problem is severe, you may
want to try an anti-infl ammatory diet. Along with avoiding the usual suspects — sugar, gluten, refi ned carbs, vegetable oils high in omega-6 fatty acids, alcohol, etc. — nightshade veggies, such as tomatoes and eggplant, are also discouraged. One example is the Tom Brady
Diet, aka TB12, which the seemingly ageless seven-time Super Bowl champion quarterback follows. Exercise: Many studies show
that moderate exercise reduces the production of infl ammatory cytokines. Shoot for at least a half- hour a day. Exercising can also help you lose
weight, which reduces infl ammation because fat cells secrete infl ammatory substances. Toxins: The immune system sees
anything that isn’t native to the body as an invader and will attack it, promoting infl ammation.

hile there are plenty of anti-inflammatory drugs available, most notably NSAIDs and corticosteroids, they have serious
