The North West Elevator Studios Liverpool

Liverpool’s Baltic Triangle has never been short of character, but Elevator Studios remains one of the neighbourhood’s anchor points - a commercial, multi-use building that has evolved into one of the city’s most established creative and tech hubs. It’s a place where Liverpool’s creative energy has gathered, stretched and reinvented itself for more than a decade. To under- stand why it continues to attract such a loyal and diverse tenant base, we spoke to asset manager Ellis from CERT Property, the company responsible for managing the building and shaping its long-term strategy.

A heritage that still shapes how people work

Elevator Studios’ identity is inseparable from its fabric. Originally a Victorian warehouse, the 200-year-old Grade II-listed building has been reclaimed by generations of musicians, makers and digital pioneers. Its exposed brickwork and timber beams aren’t just aesthetic touches, they are part of the building’s working culture.

“Creativity thrives in spaces with history,” Ellis says. “People are craving something real again. You can feel the age of the building in the walls, and that atmosphere is hard to replicate in modern developments.”

The Baltic Triangle has evolved into Liverpool’s creative engine room, and Elevator Studios sits right at its centre, amplifying the appeal. “The area is already full of artists and independents,” Ellis explains. “Our job is to support what’s here, not reinvent it. That’s why the businesses we attract tend to be the ones who want to be part of that ecosystem.”

CERT’s role: property management with a community lens

Behind the scenes, CERT’s management approach is unusually hands-on. Rather than treating Elevator as a standard commercial asset, the team focuses on shaping the building around the diverse tenants under its roof, and the people who use it.

“We spend a lot of time talking to tenants,” Ellis says. “That gives us a clear sense of what they need, and we adapt the building accordingly.”

This has led to initiatives that go far beyond traditional property manage- ment. Empty units have been turned into gallery spaces for emerging art- ists, with the wider community invited in to enjoy the exhibitions. Vacant suites are also used for events and short-term creative projects between tenancies, keeping the space active and contributing to the wider cultural ecosystem. Competitive pricing allows early-stage businesses to take their first steps in the building, with room to scale into larger suites as they grow. And in a move that has resonated across the community, CERT is currently running a programme offering vacant spaces free of charge for short-term

use - an initiative that has brought in theatre groups, photographers and students. That openness recently extended to supporting artists who lost their studios due to a building closure elsewhere in the city. “They fit our culture perfectly,” Ellis adds. “And we’re working on keeping them here long-term.”

A tenant mix that creates its own momentum

The atmosphere at Elevator Studios is shaped by its unusual mix of uses: offices, retail, food and drink, and a network of music and creative studios. The result is a building that feels active at all hours. Inside, the tenant community spans musicians, gamers, digital agencies and mixed-media artists. “When you’re surrounded by people who work differently to you, it sparks ideas, and that cross-pollination is a big part of why creatives choose Elevator Studios,” Ellis says.

What’s available now and what’s next

For businesses looking to join, Elevator Studios currently offers a range of options: large floor plates of 3,059 sq ft and 2,650 sq ft, smaller private studios, hot desks, meeting rooms and soon, a dedicated creative co-work- ing space. Looking ahead, Ellis sees demand only increasing. “We already have a waiting list for smaller creative studios. Elevator Studios is becoming the go-to destination for working creatives in Liverpool.”

CERT’s very own ‘CERT Life app’ further strengthens internal connections, allowing tenants to keep connected and share events and collaborate with people they may not have met otherwise.

Join the creative hub at Elevator

For anyone considering a move, Ellis keeps it simple: “If you want to be part of a large creative hub in Liverpool, surrounded by like-minded people in a heritage building where your business can genuinely thrive - Elevator is the place for you.”
